Chengdu Zanhuayuan Zoo Chengdu Zanhuayuan Zoo

I have uploaded a new series of photos from this remarkable (and not in a good way) zoo. Rather than focus on the incredible collection I have tried to show not just the exhibits but also the general ambiance of the place. Clearly the photos are not pretty, and most of the enclosures deserve to be condemned on various grounds. As you judge, I would just gently suggest you consider the context.

Chengdu Zanhuayuan Zoo - ZooChat

More news from this place would be welcome, these photos are already a year old and it was reported somewhere that the linsang has since died.

I'm sure the information below is already known to some zoochatters but I'll post it here in case anyone else is interested in this place.

The Zanhuayuan Zoo is mostly funded by the owner himself though it is open to visitors and charges an admission fee. The owner clearly likes animal but has no idea of either modern wildlife conservation or animal husbandry. According to the owner, most of the rarities here are "rescued" animals, though by rescuing he means directly purchasing them from bushmeat markets. It could be easily argued that no matter how well-intended, these purchasing are essentially part of the wildlife trade, though many of these animals would surely have ended up in the kitchen table had not been brought here, and there is no guarantee that those confiscated by legal enforcement would get much better treatment.

The menagerie is a controversial place among Chinese zoo enthusiasts. Despite having a government-issued license to function as a legal rescue center, there have been multiple attempts by activists and NGOs to shut this place down. It is heard that the current site would soon be closed, while the owner gets to keep the animals he traded from other zoos, all "rescued" animals would go to Chengdu Zoo. The menagerie itself will be relocated to Shifang, a county 40 miles north to the city.

Hello, does anyone have any update on this institution? Is it still opened and existing in its new location in Shifang?

Also, would anyone have the coordinates / exact address of the original location in the outskirts of Chengdu?

Thanks in advance for your help,

Jonas

It is still opened. Search "什邡国学精品动物园" or "红豆幸福里" in Gaode Map and you'll find the place.

I may be traveling through Chengdu next month. Who knows, are the following visible in the zoo?

Himalayan brown /tawny owl
Large Indian civet
Small-toothed palm civet
Spotted linsang
Crab-eating mongoose
Chinese ferret badger
Asian badger
Yellow-throated marten
Bengal slow loris
Large bamboo rat
Black giant squirrel
Giant flying squirrel
Pika - which species?

Spotted Linsang, Slow Loris, Giant Squirrel are currently not in the zoo. Flying squirrel should only have red and white giant flying squirrel.
The specific species of owls at present may need further confirmation, for I haven't been to this place for a while.
I'm not sure this zoo can keep Pika alive.
other animals should be visible.

By the way, this zoo moved out of Chengdu in 2019 and is now located in the "红豆幸福里" in Shifang. It can still be reached from Chengdu through online ride hailing services or remote buses, but it requires a longer round-trip time.

In mid-April, the pikas were still there. But the Species cannot be determined.

Thanks a lot! How long it might take to get to the place from an airport? Any idea? By the way, I am not familiar which ride-hailing apps and which English-Chinese translation app is most useful in China.

It is approximately 140 kilometers from Chengdu Tianfu Airport and takes about 1 hour and 50 minutes by car. But it cannot be guaranteed that drivers at the airport will be willing to travel to Shifang, so it would be better to book a ride on an online ride hailing service.

In China, “滴滴出行(Didi Chuxing)” is commonly used for taking a taxi, and some mainstream map apps such as “高德地图(Gaode Map)”can also directly take a taxi. I'm not sure whether foreigners can use Google Translate and map in China when traveling. We usually use Youdao Translate, Baidu Translate and Sogou Translate more.

Thanks again everybody who helped me with the info about this zoo!

Finding the place, and then getting back from it to Chengdu was a little difficult. Currently the zoo is in Shifang, about 1 h north of Chengdu, and on the Didi app it is called Zanhuayuan (Guoxue Boutique Zoo). Entrance is through a larger theme park or recreation area to the west of the zoo proper.

It is, indeed, a mediocre zoo or animal shelter (but is it really worse than some shelters in Europe?). Worth visiting only for several local species not found in European zoos. It contains large cages for carnivores and primates, small cages for rodents, herps and domestic animals, a waterfowl pond, and some small paddocks / stables for local ungulates, ratites and domestic animals.I put photos in the gallery.

Partial species list (I forgot some domestics and common species):

Herps:

Chinese giant salamander (2, in a darkened concrete tank)
Toad sp.
Corn snake

Wreathed hornbill
Crested myna (one)
East Asian grey heron (one)
Little egret (one)
Spotted dove (at least 2 pairs)
Grey parrot

Red-billed blue magpie
Red-billed chough (several)
Red-billed leiothrix
Black-collared starling
Crested Myna

Primates:

Sugar glider

Carnivores:
Chinese red panda (one)
Chinese golden cat Catopuma temminckii tristis (single)
Binturong (Presumed ssp. albifrons, 3 individuals)
Small-toothed palm civet (presumably subspecies Arctogalidia trivirgata leucotis. 3 individuals. My new favorite carnivore, very agile, behaves more like a lemur than a carnivore).
Himalayan palm civet (several)
Common palm civet (several)
Owston's palm civet (single)
Small Indian civet (pair)
Large Indian civet (pair)

The zoo recently exhibited Black Giant Squirrel(Ratufa bicolor),Common Long-eared Hedgehog (Hemiechinus auritus) and Steppe Eagle(Aquila nipalensis).

In addition, it now operates independently and was previously affiliated with a scenic area.

This zoo will soon receive some Forest Musk-deer and a Tufted Deer.
They have welcomed a new Large Indian Civet and a pair of Small-toothed Ferret-badgers.
Unfortunately, all their pikas and jerboas are no longer on display, and they may have all passed away.
