Chessington Zoo Chessington Zoo Developments.

Lets hope he has a long and succesful life there.

So do chessington only have 5 breeding females at this moment? (I know 4 are on the pill at the moment which makes sense with not much room for growth until new enclosure)

the 5 females in the main group are;
Kaja( born Howletts) has one daughter in this group(Asili)
Shani- born Chessington- breeder.
Asili-born Chessington-breeder.
Buu (daughter of Kumba x Shani) *not on pill- being mated by Damisi.
Sangha(younger daughter of K x S )

the two youngest offspring of Shani & Asili by Kumba, that presently live with Kumba and Baffia, are one male and one female.

'Mjuku' that moved to London is Asili's older daughter with Kumba.

It will be interesting to see which has a baby first- Buu at Chessington or Mjuku at London? (could also depend on whether London male is fertile I guess.:( )

I would put my money on Buu!

Chessington have the better set up with a more natural group and seems to show in breeding of gorilla's. I have little hope london's will breed anytime soon.

Well, the only obstacle to ZSL breeding from their gorillas is the viability of Bobby. He has been mating with both effie and mjuku, so it's not entirely unrealistic to expect a birth, unless his fertility is so low as to make the chances of conception unlikely.

I expect they will breed, but if they do I don't think it will happen for a few years.

No, disagree, if they are going to breed it will be now- as CZjimmy said it depends entirely on whether Bobby is fertile or not as there's been plenty of mating. Having said that, I'd expect to hear Buu at Chessington is pregnant very soon! So I won't make a wager...;)

Fertility treatment for Salome and a cataract operation for Romina were the factors that facilitated the breeding from the current bristol group....effie and mjuki at london have no known issues that could present obstacles to breeding. It's all resting on Bobby's 'lazy sperm' by the looks of it....

Didn't bristol's two female's take a while to actually have babies?

Both were fully mature and both had medical problems(Romina= cataracts, Salome= ovulation problems) coupled with the fact Bobby/Bongo didn't mate with either of them during the two years they were together there. Both of them actually got pregnant quite soon after Jock replaced him.

Buu and Mjuku are both prime young females and I'd expect them to become pregnant even more quickly. A similar aged(9) young female at Duisburg Zoo recently gave birth only just over nine months from being put with a new male... she must have concieved from almost the very first matings with him.

It is indeed. We know Effie can breed as she's had two before, while Mjuku is a perfect partner.

Its worth noting here that 'Buu' is actually the granddaughter of London Zoo's original(first) breeding female 'Lomie' who has one daughter at Chessington(shani) and one at Bristol(salome).

I am not clear on how 'ownership' of any of these animals stacks up nowadays as they are largely managed by EEP, but some years ago when Chessington was in danger of closing down, there was talk of their Gorilla group being split up as the animals in it were 'owned' between the several zoos where the original founders came from(Jersey, London, Chessington & Howletts) and it was a pretty complicated issue. Fortunately nothing happened.

Is there any updates with the Gorilla group at London zoo, any more breeding or news

Hi Mark. I haven't heard anything lately. A birth at London would be more significant though since Bobby has no offspring or relatives whereas Damisi/Buu at Chessington have plenty.

I am sure they could obtain them from private breeders though they would then have to pay for them ! I assume that is how the birds at Edinburgh ( and Bristol ? ) were sourced .

I'm sure I'm not the only to find that absolutely hilarious. There are now so many Rainbow Lorikeet walkthroughs in Europe that we've run out of the blessed things! :D

From their facebook page, with notable births during the year, and for me the real stand out is the hatching of an Andean condor.

A record 63 little baby animals and a whole lot of fish are set to celebrate their first Christmas in the Zoo!

Head down to Chessington Zoo this Christmas and join over 63 cuddly, furry, bouncy, jumpy, feathery, scaly and downright adorable baby animals as they celebrate their first ever Christmas between 12 December 2009 and 3 January 2010 (excluding Christmas Day).

Mbula the Western Lowland Gorilla, Smeagol the Ring Tailed Lemur and latest addition Ayu the Binturong are just three of the many babies on the list, which also includes an Andean condor, a pygmy marmoset monkey, a red-legged seriema, two red handed tamarin monkeys, two spider monkeys, four otters, four poison arrow frogs, four skunks, four capybaras, six polecats, seven meerkats, nine mara and fifteen hens! And that’s not to mention the many aquatic creatures born in the SEA LIFE Centre, which includes big bellied sea horses, jellyfish, dogfish and rays.

Again from their facebook page.
