I love the cassowaries, hope they do breed eventually. Spent ages in Queensland hoping to see them, only saw poo but cassowary poo is very important poo!
The cassowary were supposed to move into part of the next phase of Islands in Danger, but that's on-hold pending funding and won't happen any time soon.
I probably should've mentioned the cheetah activities yesterday. Two males were in the area south of the Bats Bridge, Adaze was still in the northerly annex but KT and Matrah had been successfully mixed in the yurt enclosure. They were actually busy - doing something - inside the small hut behind the grass mound, with KT diving in and out occasionally to look around. Fingers crossed that there's a positive outcome.

You may make fun of it, be my guest. However my remarks were in context of perhaps acquiring owls and birds of prey which would suit the Philippine or S.E. Asian theme of the zoo (so sorry I missed the bird talk ...
).I look forward to the wild dog development opening before long. Looks like a great addition to the Tsavo area!
Possibly... there were reports yesterday that she could have been on-show, but when I saw her she was definitely back in the north annex.
When she was in season a few weeks ago there was a lot of interest from one of the males, but unfortunately the two are related. It'll also depend on what the studbook holder decides.

According to ISIS, chester alreday has 1 male. Wonder when it arrived?
ISIS lists the female hyrax as Procavia capensis capensis. They arrived in December 2010.

A few notes from today.
Upali was out with the rest of the herd all day today. Was good to see him out with the herd and interacting well with the rest of the herd. Later in the afternoon Upali & Sundara were alone near the waterfall with both seeming very intersted in each other. Jamilah was busy having fun with Nayan and was following him around constantly.
Both Okapi were outside mixed together today they seemed at ease with each other.
No sign of Kinky Tail or Matrah today. Just the two other males. Also lots of scent marking by Iblis.

A couple more updates from Z spring 2011. Anyone who has attended the gatherings with Tim Rowlands in recent months will probably class this as old news but here it is for anyone who doesn't know..
Work on the Giant Otter house and underwater viewing area was going to start in January, however they have been mating and for this reason it's on hold to save any stress for her in case she turns out to be pregnant.
Renovations to SOJ will begin in the Autumn. They will include a central aquatic exhibit containing turtles, fish (no species given) and various other species. The leaf cutter Ant enclosure is also being moved and work being done on the Savannah side of the jags area. Sloths are also on the cards although they are proving a challenge to source
For the members area of the website, would anyone else read a monthly blog? possibly with different members of staff throughout the year (eg: Curator of birds, vets etc)

There isn't one yet. On page two of Z it says 'we are looking at creating a members ony area.'
I will definetly suggest it. I thought weekly at first but I know they are busy people at Chester so maybe monthly might be more realistic
I think weekly would be feasible, Edinburgh manage to keep it weekly (or did, not checked for a while) - maybe monthly would be more realistic but I think weekly isn't an impossible task

I do hope both of these eventually come to pass! Baby giant otters and any kind of sloth are a rarity in the UK, as I recall.
