Bit of news from todays visit. They are currently building a Feeding Platform in the Giraffe enclosure where the old poles used to be. The male Whip scorpion has been taken off show leaving the female(I only found out there were two in there today) on her own as she is carrying young. They removed him so he wont eat the young. Also sometime in the last week the Dwarf Mongoose have had 5 babies. I have attached photos of both the Platform and Mongoose - I couldn't get a photo of the Whip Scorpion as she was hiding round the back of the log I saw the male on.

They've been doing that for a while: http://www.zoochat.com/42/giraffe-experience-area-construction-31-03-a-208465/

Good news about the dwarf mongoose, the weather is warming up and they've got their new, larger indoor accommodation so all should bode well for the kittens. Much easier to see than waiting for them to poke their heads out of the old box too!

Great news indeed :)

Has anybody heard that Trotters world of animals has recevied a male Serval from Chester?

My girlfriend won't be happy about that ;) especially if the other Serval at Chester has been moved elsewhere too....

Not heard anything about that. Thing is Chester only have two male's and no plans to try and breed them last I was told. Does anyone know if they are moving them on? And if so what are they replacing them with if anything?

Plan has always been that 1:0 would be moved and a female bought in for the remaining one.

That's good then :). As I say last I was told(last summer) there were no plans for getting a female. Glad to see that has changed though :). Now the question is who has been moved? Ninja or Lanky. Either way its a bit of a loss :(.

I was told he same thing as Nisha re: servals.

The kangaroos were inside while the fence is being painted and work was being done to the floor in the giraffe house.

The dog exhibit looks good, and there are 3 new roan antelope next door. The porcupines have been moved and apparently the yellow mongoose are going into the same enclosure but are still in the round enclosure for the moment.

I had trouble getting my camera over the rope bridge at the swamp area. It certainly wasn't designed for short people!

The Sumatran laughing thrushes are no longer on show, but I saw the collared grosbeaks for the first time in almost a year. One male was singing.

Something is being built alongside the Joseph Banks Room.

A window was being repalced at the Bornean Orang Utan enclosure.

Just a quick note from Friday. One of the male Cheetah was being mixed with Adaze. She seemed to be very submissive rolling onto her back quickly with both looking interested in each other. Also part of the fencing separating the two outdoor Okapi paddocks has been removed so that they Okapi can now move between each paddock. Both were together for a good part of Friday.
One of the female Painted dogs has injured her right paw it is being treated by keepers. Not sure how it was injured. The Giraffe feeding area looks finished now. The yellow Mongoose are still in the round enclosure next to the Kangaroos.

The okapi have been together for a few months now, and the division between the two paddocks open for that length of time. Apparently their matings have been more successful as a result, although whether the female has conceived is another matter.

From what I was told it was Matrah she was put in with. When I was watching them they were both close to the Yurt window but any time Matrah got that bit to close Adaze let him know he had to back off.

It's Kumi who has the injured Right rear leg. I wasn't told how she injured it only she did it on Thursday. However she also has/had a little scratch under her right eye which has lead me to think the pack still hasn't got a defined pecking order yet.

I have attached 2 photo's from my friday trip - 1 being Adaze and the other the cut on Kumi's face.

Notable news from today is that the Black-Tailed Marmosets have given birth to twins. They are both tiny and have not opened their eyes yet.

Whilst researching something at work recently I was interested to read that chimerism occurs quite a bit in marmosets.

That would account for some aspects of their social system then. Is there any evidence of chimaerism in dogs and wolves because that would make sense too?

I only came across marmosets specifically and as I was meant to be looking at stem cell transplantation I didn't pursue it further :)

Can anyone confirm that Male Black Tailed Marmosets will help to carry the young to help in the upbringing? The reason I ask is that today whilst at the zoo avoiding the blanket coverage of the royal splicing I noticed the new twins out and about around their enclosure on the back of an adult - who I thought was mum until it turned around and it definately had...erm....nadgers! So a male! I've not gone barmy have I? this isn't an impossible happening (the male helping not a female with nadgers obviously - coz that would just be silly!)
