I emailed the Zoo on the night of the baby Tigers birth(Unaware it was born of course)and I got some new information which I don't think hasn't been mentioned.

There are two baby Ural Owls.

Yes, there is a new male Philippine Spotted Deer.

There is a new baby Gemsbok.
 
I will say this with tongue in cheek, the news about the cub was top secret! Like this is MI5 for goodness sake yes I was given a flea in my ear today for mentioning it like what is the secret.......I am over the moon that Kirana has a cub I am not remotely intrested in zoo politics. and the photo is great well done fellow zoo lovers. Big x to you all.

I think, especially with carnivores, keeping news of a birth quiet may serve to keep visitor numbers at the exhibit/length of time spent there - from increasing due to public knowledge and therefore desire to see, a young animal.

Are you a keeper? So please tell me why cubs are often put on show when very young to draw crowds and make money as in the case of Kirana and her brother Topan Also Bandas next four siblings:mad:

You've just answered your question. I personally think that most smaller zoos do that, I'm not saying they do it for that reason.

I think there are two different issues here. One is keeping newly born cubs quiet or secret, to avoid (as Johnstoni mentioned above) over-interest from visitors at a crucial time when a nervous mother may desert or kill new cubs, or to avoid publicising a non-event if they don't survive anyway.

Putting cubs out on display too early to attract visitors normally applies to cubs which are already several weeks old and past the danger period as far as their overall survival is concerned, but is still a very regrettable practise.

I get the impression that you're not happy about something in this tiger cub thread kkkp? But I'm not quite sure exactly what the problem is - not wanting to inflame the issue, I genuinely am interested as I've been reading the thread with interest but think I may have missed something along the way. Is it the allegations of 'secrecy' that have irritated you or the actual husbandry issues surrounding cubs in zoos and the publicity surrounding them?

I am an ex-keeper, though I never worked at Chester. As Pertinax says, mothers can kill their cubs if stressed by too many people/too much noise. If news of cubs are announced too early, this can happen. I'm not saying they are right to keep the news a secret, just suggesting reasons why it might have been the case.

I went today but she was hiding under a tree,but looked ok .
I could not see the cub though.
 
Visited today, there seems to have been some movement on the Lemur Islands opposite the 'Asian Steppe' exhibit. Alaotran Gentle Lemurs are now on the island normally inhabited by Black-and-white Ruffed Lemurs, and Geoffroy's Marmoset have moved into the exhibit where the Gentle Lemurs were.
