Just because you can't/haven't seen something, it doesn't mean it has died. Pele is notoriously difficult to spot.

I have visited most weekends in the last three years and only saw him about 4 times! He is very difficult to spot.

Pele had been seen on the 27th August in the indoor house by visitors and the vanished to the rear of the large rock formation not too be seen again that day

Is the male Onager being separated a just a tempory fixture and is the plan to breed them?
If they were not planning on breeding the species why would they have brought in more females a couple of years ago?I believe the keeping of the male on his own is for the mangement of the group!

Anywhere with limited paddock space tends to keep their male Wild Ass(Onager, Somali etc) seperate from the females a lot of the time as they can be very excitable and aggressive to the mares sometimes.

There's a photo on the Woburn gallery(I think) of their Somali stallion chasing the female and she is a bit bloody from his teeth,(they were seperated asap.)

Really!?!?

Well it just shows , I have only been to Chester 3 times in the last 18 months and saw him everytime without having to wait or really look for him.

He must know I am visiting, either that or he likes my musk...:p

He has a 'thing' for Pink Rhinos :D

A few observations on answers to my questions
No, the zoo may not announce pregnancies, but, some of the keepers can be quite forthcoming if asked nicely, and I wondered if anyone had asked and got a reply.
Blackbuck numbers decreasing, are animals dying? if so why?
I heard Pele had died from a family member who does not visit the zoo very often,as I had not seen him on my last visit I thought I would ask
On a members day I asked a keeper if Pele is kept inside at all times.
Answer, no he allowed outside one day a month.
Has anyone ever seen him outside? I never have

Some notes from today.

Work has started on the Spirit of the Jaguar modifications. Jaguar (the company, not the cats) are no longer involved, so their logo will be removed, including I believe, from the outside of the building. A solid perimeter fence is being built while construction takes place.

The giant otter construction is progressing and there's now a huge hole at the rear of the penguin filtration plant.

Work has also begun on the raised viewing platform for the tigers. Judging by the placement of the foundations (and the demolition of part of Europe on the Edge) access will be via the ramp opposite the penguins and the steps opposite June's Pavilion.

"Gardens of Distinction" signs have gone up in a number of locations. I personally find this hard to stomach, especially as the zoo looks so unkempt at the moment (Chester looks scruffier and less cared-for than any of the zoos I've visited recently). Ten years ago before the horticultural scorched earth policy began, maybe, but today, when there's nothing distinctive whatsoever about beds of weeds, scruffy grass and bark mulch, no.

The history banner will be going back up opposite the servals, around the edge of the small snowdrop lawn.

The Chilean flamingos failed to rear any young for the first time in... goodness knows when. The Caribbeans laid before the dinosaurs arrived, but their presence put the Chileans off completely.

Asha the Asian Lioness is moving to Santilliana next week.

Long overdue, but interesting that they appear to have chosen to retire resident male Lord, who has never bred.

Asha will be replacing Chester-born female Masala, a littermate of Asoka - Masala sadly died in April after an illness.

Awww i know its long over due and is the right move but the two of them seemed so happy when i last visited and i got one of my most favourite shots of the pair....
