Iblis and Asha's ages meant that they would have a year to breed, tops.
The situation was far more complex than just being age-related. For example, it involved whether or not Asha's hormone implant levels would drop far enough to allow her to come back into season, together with studbook recommendations and a number of other factors involving the species.

Spot on SMR.As you said it wasn't just a case of them only having a limited time due to the age of the animals, alot of it was down to the direction that studbook holder wanted to go with it!

Does anyone know if and when they will get a replacement for Asha?

I would'nt have thought there was any room for any more Lions inside their quarters.

I think you will find you're are wrong on this one in that two are due together!
Well I can only say what I was told yesterday,if its wrong so be it.Certainly will not be the first time I have been wrong and will not be the last!

Well they were expecting two very recently but I guess what will be will be!

TWO lioness have arrived at Chester this afternoon
CONFIRMED by Tim Rowlands at the talk in the lecture theatre this evening 13-9-2011
NO more details available at present

This could be 2 sisters, originally born in Magdeburg about 3-4 years ago, who lived the last year in Rotterdam on temporary basis. I have heard that 2 of the lions from Rotterdam were moved to England just a few days ago...

Oh well seeing as you cannot remember it I will let people wait until it goes on facebook. As for throwing a sicky to go and see some Lions,if I employed you and found out that was the reason you would be able to spend all your time watching them!!

The news about the lions was shared with a room full of ~150 members. It was not given in confidence.

Unfortunately they're unlikely to be outside until late in the week, or early next.

Once again you are playing 'I know something you don't know' with the members of this site. Or is it because you don't want to make a bold statement like you did about the lions only to realise you add made a bit of a fool of yourself?

No its nothing to do with being worried about making myself look like a fool again,I have no problems holding my hands up and saying I was wrong, which in the case of the Lions I was,but so were alot of the zoo's own staff on the sunday,as a few of them told me they only had the one arriving.

As for the other bit of news I was one of atleast 7 zoochatters that I know of that attended the meeting last night, but I'm sure it will find its way on to here very soon.

On a brighter note, the following has been announced on Facebook.

***CHEETAH CUBS NAMED***

We can now officially reveal the names of all four cheetah cubs.

Thanks to your votes, the girls will be called KINZA & SHENDI and the boys, RUFAA & JUBA.

With them still being so young it's tricky to distinguish between them, but the general rule is that females tend to have slightly smaller heads.

Juba is a superbly topical name, being the capital of the new independent nation of South Sudan. Nice touch.

I didn't actually vote, but by chance all four of the names I favoured won :) shame a name derived from Acinonyx wasn't in the running, considering one derived from jubatus was!

Certainly a shame there was nothing to represent soemmeringii consdering this is one aspect that makes these cubs extra special.

Juba, as I say, is the capital of South Sudan. soemmeringii is known as the Sudanese Cheetah. That's at least one subspecies-related name. ;)

EDIT:

After a quick google of the other three names:

Rufaa is the name of an ethnic group in Sudan.
Shendi is a town in northern Sudan.
Can't immediately find a Sudanese link for Kinza, but I suspect there's one there somewhere.
