Thanks to karoocheetah who pointed out that the new female lions were out and about yesterday. (and also de-wasped my shoulder)

Fantastic animals. Both a little hesitant, as can be expected... As the afternoon progressed the smaller of the two braved a trip to the gate in the lion enclosure to the side of the lion house, seemingly reassuring the larger as she went.

Later in the day both were quite contentedly relaxing on one of the wooden frames in the centre of the enclosure.

Both were drawing a lot of interest from passing keepers!

:p was my pleasure - I provide many animal removal services but wasps from shoulders is a speciality!

The new girls were extremely relaxed later in the evening - walking back to the Oakfield about 7pm after Alan's tour on the Roaring event - they stalked me along the fence line and then proceeded to pounce on each other. I had my fingers crossed for the introduction to Iblis this morning - hope it went to plan!

I was at Chester yesterday and saw all three outside at a distance thru trees, they all looked pretty relaxed.
Too bad the jag house was still not open.

I think it is a fairly common term actually. Just done a search on it and it seems to be the preferred term for most zoos.

Yeah, either name's fine. I tend to go with Asian myself but Oriental's not wrong by any means.

It's just the same sub-species sorry for the confusion.

It's a species not a subspecies. ;)

I've known them as Oriental short-clawed otter, Oriental small-clawed otter, Asian short-clawed otter and Asian small-clawed otter. Is there any other species at Chester which has so many names?

My favourite multi-named critter at Chester is Cebus xanthosternus AKA buffy-headed capuchin, golden- bellied capuchin, yellow-breasted c, buffy-headed tufted capuchin, buff-headed capuchin.... and I'm sure I've seen it referred to as Monk capuchin. Beat that!

@Wolverine you have forgotton Weeping Capuchin

How many more species are thier in the collection with multi names

I would think almost all species have multiple common names however the only one that springs to mind to rival that, that i can think of off the top of my head would be the Pekin Robin aka :-

Red-billed Leiothrix, Chinese Nightingale, Pekin Nightingale, Japanese Nightingale, and Japanese Robin and I'm sure there's at least one that relates them to their true family as a Babbler.

Saw them today. It is the first time in 27 years that Chester has kept a female Grevy's zebra. The previous female was Amy, born in the zoo on 19th June 1971 and who went to Whipsnade on 21st March 1984.

The tiger viewing platform has been completed but is not open yet.

Myself and my girlfriend went to Chester today too :)

Other than the aforementioned zebra there is not much else to report. Work seems to be plodding on fairly nicely with the extension to the giant otter enclosure, and despite a little rain towards the end of the day moreorless everything was quite easily visible.

Interestingly enough, today seems to have been one of the rare days where the two Okapi felt sociable and well-inclined to being seen - they were stood together in their outside paddock almost all day, which meant I *finally* got some half-decent photographs taken of them! Also meant I got to hear the full range of bizarre comments from the public about the okapi and what they were - my favorite was one offended-sounding woman saying she intended to make a complaint that the zoo had cross-bred zebra and horses. It was also interesting how many children got it right as regards the okapi belonging to the giraffe family and were "corrected" by their parents.
