my favorite was one offended-sounding woman saying she intended to make a complaint that the zoo had cross-bred zebra and horses.

awesome haha, we went today but left after about 2 hours far too many screaming children :( oh well back next week x did see the new Zebra and watched Iblis showing the new girls who was boss

Just out of interest can anyone tell me if the Cattle House has now re-opened or is it still shut? Thanks

Sounds horrific ;) "More than 20,000 people passed through the zoo’s gates on Saturday and Sunday, almost double the previous highest of 10,416 in 2007."

Also says "The zoo welcomed its one millionth visitor four weeks earlier than in 2010, having seen attendance rocket since the opening of the [dinosaur] exhibition in July."

- Record-breaking city zoo crowds bask in heat

Having been there on Sunday, I can believe it!

My parents set off for adopters day. When they saw the state of the car park they turned around and went home.

More stupid scheduling by the zoo; promote the heck out of the last weekends of the dinosaurs and hold an adopters day on one of them.

Grevys Zebra & Cattle Shed

In 1960 the cattle shed was the zebra house; it housed 3 grevys and 5 or 6 grants, 2 Zebroids,5 Gemsbok, 5 Brindled Gnu and a S American Tapir. Is hard to to imagine them all in there. The house was heated with a coke boiler in the yard. That section [2 keepers] also had 2 paddocks where the Orangs are, llamas & Rhea and wallabies & Emu and the beaver pool,Raccoon pit coypu pit and the Wolverine enclosure; of those, only the wolverine enclosure still exists.
The stalls in the Zebra house were built out of African Hardwood which had been crates from the African Shipments in the late 50's.

I had expected not to like the dinosaur display, but actually thought it was very good. And genuinely educative.

Update from today...

Chester no longer have Philippine Crocodile within the zoo. (Signage has been removed and the exhibit is in the process of being cleared).
They will be back once Islands is completed....

That's a shame. Are there no crodocdile of any species in the collecting at the moment then?

Why have they left?

This leaves Chester with no crocodilian species, that is correct :) - a shame since they're such a nice order, but will be good to see them in Islands :)

Well, the enclosure itself wasn't too cold, but it was costing a small fortune to heat and as it didn't have a roof, required temporary insulation to stop that heat escaping into the Tropical Realm.
