Chester Zoo Chester 2012 #4

The Okapi calf now has access to the on-show part of the house. Though the ouse is closed most of the time, at certain times the keepers are briefly letting in small groups.

The calf looks very good, and has been named "Dafari" (or something like that).

Close it's 'Tafari' :D

much better than the shortlist for the new Giraffe Calf which is (phonetically I hasten to add)

Chezzer (which apparently means something in Swahili rather than the scouse way of saying Chester)
Nala
Tala

zoo staff choosing and results to be shared as soon as known

All these names-a that sound the same-a (with the exception of Chezzer, which is atrocious), somebody-a needs to be a little more creative-a.

I agree: with all the different Realms in the zoo, perhaps we ought to have more royal names

I REALLY, REALLY, REALLY wish they'd have the little rhino on show soon, like this week, they grow like crazy!

It is the weather that is holding things up. If the rhino had been born earlier in the year she would have been allowed out a lot sooner.

I don't recall it being much of an issue with Asani though - but then again, he was born in an on-show house. Shame Kitani isn't having another one imminently!

Yes but the paddocks weren't as water logged when Asani, was born hence another reason why they are being sensible with the youngster.

Well in that case you better hope and pray the zoo has a move round in the Rhinos, then as its the only chance we have of getting to see the youngster, before the end of the year given the wonderfull weather we are having at the moment.

True enough - even transporting all of the sand from the sahara to chester to fill potholes and soak up water wouldn't be enough at the moment - the paddock looked sodden and squelchy on sunday :( I want to see the new calf as much as everyone else here - baby rhino are up there on the "Ah Cute" scale! :D

I really wish they had seized the day and called the okapi Diem.

The giant otter pups have made their first public appearance in the indoor area.
