That's a little bit sad I know they would be going but its a bit sooner than I expected was going to pop up and see them Wednesday
I did notice that they were separating them for feeding so I guess it was time for them to go
A brilliant success for Chester zoo tho hoping that the Asiatic. Lions are next :)
Ps I know you said just the one cub Nila is going but I guess the other one won't be long before she goes to a new home
 
No baby rhino but a baby okapi looking through a window at you about 6 inches from your nose is a pretty good substitute. What a sturdy looking animal she is and very cute running around. Great job Stuma.

Bear cubs would also be nice :)
 
Lovely visit to Chester yesterday. Worth it just for the gorgeous okapi calf. She is adorable and so sturdy. I love the okapi house its so peaceful I could sit there all day. A bench would be lovely :)

Saw the baby orang, baby giraffe and 2 of the water buffalo calves.

Had a lovely half hour watching the chimps in morning. I've never seen so many of them up the poles before.

Is the tapir pregnant again, I thought she looked huge?

Ang Bo the male elephant is fabulous, was great to see him out with girls and enjoying a shower. Jamilah is so the boss of everyone though! :D

Haven't been to Chester for ages so was lovely to go on a quiet sunny day without huge crowds
 
The house was open yesterday and the calf was sometimes visible and sometimes not, appeared to be her decision.
 
Stuma the Female was outside yesterday but the calf is being kept indoors at the moment. The keepers are rotating the access to the indoor enclosure between Dickie the male and Stuma and the calf 'Tafari' to stop any chance of her getting stressed by having the male and the calf in each others vicinity.
The access door from the giraffe house through to the Okapi house was open freely on both Friday & Sunday this week too - maybe if it gets manic they will review access but the staff seem fine with access as it stands as these are officially 'the quieter zoo months' but I'd assume that if it got noisy and busy they would review that access if needed.
 
Got our Chester membership renewal letter today, for some reason expiry will be 30th December, instead of 31st - not sure why this is.

Also it states on the benefits that there are two members days, where we can bring up to 12 people at a discounted price [not half price now it seems].

Probably a computer confused by the leap year - all it takes is for it to treat a membership as '365 days' instead of 'one year' and, hey presto.

Which enclosure is the baby okapi in?
, I assume its on the right after you go through the girrafes
Had a look but couldn't see him
 
She was not there the first time we went in although Stuma was, but the door to the off-show area was open and we returned an hour or so later and she came trotting out to Stuma. She stayed out a while, had a bit of a run around, suckled briefly, came and looked through the glass and then after a while disappeared back to the off-show area so I think it's a case of luck and patience.

When very young I think young Okapi 'lie up' like deer fawns and other young ungulates somewhere quiet when they are resting, so you need to chance on one of her activity periods. As she grows she will become more frequently visible.

Have just seen the otter cubs having a swimming lesson in the inside area :)

I know I was jucky just got there and they appeared :)
Each of the parents grabbed a cub and carried it into the water , dont think the cubs were keen but they have to learn how to swim:D
 
I got lucky again and saw the baby Okapi, thanks orange person and pertinax for the help:)

She came out for a good 10 minutes :)

Also saw the Phillipine spotted deer fawn from the walkway
(the viewing area is still blocked off with a pile of bark chippings)

The Sitatunga fawn is growing fast too:)

Great stuff - if you are still there don't forget 3x Capybara Babies, The baby Orang & the dwarf mongoose had pups too when I was there on sunday.
