Chester Zoo Chester 2012 #4

Life size model animals have appeared on the Oakfield lawn. Flamingo, chimpanzee, giraffe, tiger, zebra and Asian elephant. No idea why they are there but I thought it just looked untidy.

Are these the lanterns for the Christmas event? Animals seem to match up to the photos I've seen.

I'm sorry I missed you today bongorob, having done the same with Maguari at Donna Nook a couple of weeks ago.
I didn't get as far around the zoo as you did, but I saw the baby giant otters twice, plus the baby capybaras, but I missed the okapi calf (although Dickie and Stuma were both outside separately).
The worst part of my visit was the music blaring out of Visitor Services when I arrived, which seemed to come from Woolworth's Naffest Xmas Album Ever: fortunately the situation had improved by the time I left as they were playing brass band versions of carols and then an organ version of Jesu Joy of Man's Desiring at a much lower volume, which was a great improvement.
The elephants were kept inside all day (with Aung Bo off-show), I presume because it was too cold for the baby.
One or two photos to come ;)

Alan

Saw the little otters both inside and out today!

Only Aung Bo seemed to go out today. Little elephant was trying to pick hay up like the adults but couldn't get his trunk to bend round!

Saw one of the other okapi behind the giraffes and Dickie & Stuma but missed the calf.

Three women were going round and had so many 'suggestions' they wanted to make they'd need a list. People not taking endless flash photos of a sloth just a few feet away obviously wasn't one of them. The sloths were very busy today, I went in twice and they were up (well down) and about both times.

Still kids looking for the dinosaurs - time for a new map maybe? Are they on the current one? The people certainly seemed to be studying the map at the time.

I was asked where the dinosaurs were on Wednesday by a family who were unable to read the map.

They really do need a map that can be used by visitors. And that doesn't look as if it is thrown together as an afterthought.

A guidebook would be nice as well.

Baby Orangutan has been given the name, "Tripa"

I can see why but not keen - although I would not have been applauding Puluh as a name choice if I'd been there! Still anything that could bring attention to Tripa is a good thing.

Had a nice morning yesterday in the butterfly house lots of butterflies and a good variety of species
Best place to be on a wet and cold Sunday :)
They have managed to breed the atlas moths the caterpillars are huge
Hopefully will see the adults when they emerge:)

What is 'Tripa'- apart from the name of this baby?

Save Tripa - Sumatran Orangutan Society

"Large areas of the Tripa peat swamp forests in Sumatra - crucial orangutan habitat - have been cleared for oil palm plantations. Once home to 3,000 orangutans, there are now thought to be just 200 left.
Earlier this year, fires swept through Tripa, illegally and deliberately set by palm oil companies. Following a worldwide outcry, the Indonesian government launched an investigation and has revoked the permit of one of the companies responsible for the fires."

Thank you for the update. Does this mean Chester have two Aardvark now? I know they had 2.0 from Colchester (Brothers) and 1.0 was moved to Blackpool.
