To start off a new thread (current one is getting a bit long now)

Seem's like only yesterday that we were waiting for her birth, but Black Rhino, Bashira (Ema Elsa X Magadi b15.5.09) will be on the move shortly (If she hasn't already left) She's going to join two young bulls at Ree Park in Ebeltoft, Denmark and will eventually (all being well) become a breeding cow... Aww, they grow up so fast - but then I guess she's three in May?

Yes she was born 15th May 2009 as stated by Nisha ;).

Bashira was the second calf for Chester since 1998 when one of the current females Manyara was born. She was the first birth for Ema a.k.a Elsa (Ex Dvur Kralove) and Magadi (Ex Port Lympne). I would of expected Bashira to be moving this year or possibly next year.

I was a bit thrown by the relevent paragraph being headed "Silkworm more relevant than ever" :)

I'm sure there's a fortune to be made fobbing off Asian medicine with processed compressed toenails.

I think her 'official' name is Ema Elsa, but I've only ever heard her referred to as Ema, never Elsa :)

I was reading a document released by Dvur Kralove about all there Black rhino births over the years, it referred Ema to being Ema-Elsa so I think your right here. Same here never heard the name Elsa when it comes to Ema the Black rhino. :)

The cranes have had a move around.

Black-necked crowned now in pelican aviary.
Grey-necked crowned in the small enclosure alongside Tsavo aviary where the wattled used to be.

Wattled have moved next door to the enclosure with the big pond and the blue cranes are now in the end enclosure.

Thr red-crowned cranes are where they have always been. I wonder if they feel left out.

The Hawk Owls are now together.

One of the hyrax walked along a wall, they have an amazing ability to cling to the rockwork.

Black Rhino at Chester Zoo

if this helps at all but the Rhino team gave a members talk a year or so ago when they explained the Rhinos at the zoo as follows:

Kitani (F) b: 16th June 1997 + Sammy (M) b: 11th Nov 1999
produced...
Asani (M) b: 29th Oct 2008

Ema Elsa (F) b: 2nd Nov 2002 + Magadi (M)
produced...
Bashira (F) 15th May 2009

Rosie (F) is about 22 years old- left collection for Paignton Zoo June 2011 ish
Manyara (F) is about 13 years old - half sister to Kitani
Malindi (F) is about 5 years old
Zuri (F) b: Mar 2007 - arrived from Paignton June 2011 ish

To help identify which male is which - Sammy has a wider front horn than Magadi whos front horn is curved back and has a bigger 2nd horn than Sammy.

I will be testing you all later of course :D

I believe Rosie went to Port Lympne not Paignton. ;)

Kitani (born 16/09/97, Pangani X Quinto) and Sammy (born 11/11/02, Satchan X Tommy) produced...
Asani born 29/10/08

Ema (born 02/11/02, Elba X Jimm) and Magadi (born 09/02/99, Naivasha X Addo) produced...
Bashira born 15/05/08

Rosie was moved to Port Lympne in 2011. She was born 24/11/88, Mama Kidogo and Bwana.

Manyara was born 15/08/98 at Chester, Esther X Quinto.

Malindi was born 03/11/05 at Zoo Madgeburg, Mani X Madiba, she arrived in September 2008.

Zuri was born 05/04/07 at Paignton Zoo, Sita X Kingo. Zuri arrived 14/06/11

How to ID them

Magadi has a curved horn and is considered the most good looking of the rhinos. Malindi has wrinkles around her stomach, it's not a problem before anybody asks. I'm not good at ID'ing the others.:(

Test me now. :D

 that wooshing sound

The Zoo was busy today with the new entrance in operation and lots of staff wearing sashes guiding people to the right queue etc, it seemed to be quite smooth as I went through. The shop is larger with more tills, so although it was busy it wasn't a crush.
I didn't bother with the dinosaurs, but they seemed popular. I noticed a third warthog in with the pair in the old zebra and antelope house and a third San Francisco garter snake as well. The sand lizards were very frisky in the sunshine. The red-crowned cranes have an egg. At least one of the village weavers' new nests had a female in it. And the brow-antlered deer are rutting, the stag was very attentive to a couple of hinds and he put on a very impressive strutting display to make Beni the rhino retreat back uphill when he got a little too close to the group of hinds!

I was delighted to see the sand lizards today. A male and a female basking on a ledge. :)

The baby ellies playing in the water were another highlight, as were the sumatran orangs all outside and around the top of the waterfall.

I agree with Alan the new entry system worked very well, and is definitely a step up on 'one man and his rope' ;) Though I did wonder about how all the electronics would fair in the rain.

Are the Indian rhino pair now together fulltime do you know? And do they share the main paddock with both deer and blackbuck or only the deer?

I was there on Saturday and they were both together. Asha is a lot smaller than Beni, they seemed to be getting on fine and Asha was following him everywhere. Blackbuck were the only species outdoors on Saturday with the G.O.H Rhinos.

Both rhinos were together on Sunday and all 3 species were together in the paddock. The blackbuck are all females.

What does G.O.H mean? It sounds like a dating acronym. Good old horns?
