sad news from Chester Zoo's facebook;

"It is with great sadness we have to tell you of the death of our magnificent male giraffe Doto.

Doto was being treated for a virus after falling ill last week. Both the giraffe and veterinary teams have worked tirelessly to help him but unfortunately Doto died yesterday evening.

Doto, who was 13, had been with us since June last year after arriving from Longleat. We will be carrying out a postmortem to determine the cause of Doto's death.

The rest of the giraffe herd are well.

Tim Rowlands, Curator of Mammals, said: "Since his arrival Doto had proved to be a great addition to the herd so everyone is naturally very saddened by this turn of events. Doto had been treated with antibiotics over the last week but unfortunately all efforts to help him proved to be in vain. This is a very sad day for all concerned.""

Agreed - this is quite a blow for the zoo. Very glad the other giraffes are said to be healthy and well.

That's very sad news. Great shame as he was seeming, as Tim said, a very good member of the herd. Let's hope he will have some sort of legacy come the end of the year.

Do you remember which ones!? That would be quite irresponsible.
Yes thanks I do but I'm not going to name which moves,because they have been gone and happened,and each time have been later than the collections,that had annouced them expected them to happen!

Just announced on the Facebook page, another elephant calf was born last night to Sithami :)

How many elephants can Chester's exhibit hold. I remember when I was there last year it already felt quite full and seemed to have a great herd dynamic with a mixture of ages. Will there come a time when the herd might have to be split up?

With a modern enclosure like Chester`s, there is no fixed number. The elephants have an indoor paddock and are not seperated into single stalls at night, the herd stays together, so the number of elephants is not limited by the number of stalls.

I saw the calf today, it's already larger than the previously (admittedly tiny) calf. According to Chester's own keepers, the elephant facility was "over capacity" before the last two births.

Lousy photo, but what with limited time (they kept closing the house for filming), lots of people's heads and those horrible bars, it's the best I could get today. :o

You have done very well to get such a good photo under the circumstances

What's your feeling on the calf's sex? I want to say female.

Since Jangolie and Maya are not part of the main family unit could they be transferred else where? Assam and Po Chin were both transferred at four years of age, so perhaps something similar will happen with Nayan in the coming months.
