Just returned from a 2 day visit. Really enjoyed the Hunting Dog exhibit.
Also saw all the new babies and also 2 Babirusa piglets.

Excellent to hear the piglets are coming along well.

We saw two Banteng calves on Thursday, there was also four Kikuyu White-eyes presumably being prepared for release in the trapping aviary at the top of the ramp in the Tropical Realm.

Very nice, I've only had a glimpse of the first banteng calf up to now.

Quote from the zoo's Facebook page:

It is with great sadness that we have to tell you that, after a short illness, our male jaguar, Pele, died this morning. Born in 1993, Pele joined us in 2004, from Marwell Zoo. He has been extremely popular with staff, members and visitors alike, and will be very much missed.

I've read these forums for years but finally joined today. I've been to many Zoo's across the UK and a few in other countries. Chester is my home zoo and i'm a member. I last went just over a week ago, and I was chatting away to one of the red panda keepers and it turns out that the new female is the granddaughter of the older female. Also they are bringing a male in later in year and will hopefully keep all 3 together. The original female is apparently to old to breed now anyway. Also there was a lot of new plants in tropical realm in pots and such with the " we are currently updating this enclosure " sign around the place, I can't imagine them updating it now when it will be shutting when the Islands is completed... so they might possibly be for the upgrade it self. :) Hope to make some friends here!

The Tropical Realm isn't closing when Islands is complete unless you know something that the rest of us don't!

From the pictures they posted a while back, it looked like they were? They looked like raised walkways and all around them were birds, most recognizable was the Victoria Crowned Pigeon which is in the Tropical Realm? So I just presumed they were re-making it for the Islands... sorry if i'm wrong!

Many of the species will be moving over to islands, but I have been told that the Tropical Realm would be used to house mainly South America species of birds once Islands is done!

Ah right okay! I just presumed that it would be moved haha, sorry to confuse everyone! So really there will be 3 walk in aviary's including the wetlands one near the Rhino house? I love walk in enclosures!

Visited on Thursday and noticed the pool in the tiger enclosure has been drained and the window into the tiger house has been boarded up again. Both Fabi and Kirana were out in the enclosure.

A quick update from a visit today. The Brown-breasted barbets have been moved from the tropic realm into the tsavo aviary. A giant anteater was out in the former yellow mongoose enclosure. A great argus pheasant is a new addition to Islands in danger. The Kikuyu white-eyes are now free flying in the tropical realm.

Zoogiraffe and I were there today. We spotted the argus pheasant.

It is the male anteater in the round enclosure, he was moved there in the hope that he would be more active. The plan is working at the moment.

Cubs maybe?

*BREAKING NEWS*
We're thrilled to tell you our tiger Kirana gave birth to cubs yesterday afternoon. Kirana and her cubs ventured out for the first time just a few moments ago and we'll bring you pictures as soon as we can. As it is very early days we'd ask that anyone hoping to catch a glimpse helps us by being keeping disturbance around the tiger enclosure to the minimum.
