Thanks for the replies regarding Asian Plains and the yellow mongoose everyone, I was under the impression that they were due to move somewhere by the hunting dogs but I guess that's been shelved now then?

The female yellow mongoose died and the elderly male was sent to Shorelands on 3rd
March 2013

A few quick notes after a quick visit yesterday,Chester no longer keep the Pla Esok fish in the Elephant House, they now also have a pair of Pink-headed Fruit Dove's.The Jaguar House will be part closed Monday to Friday all this month, while they do work on re-building the Leaf-cutter Ant exhibit, but the whole House should be open for the Weekends! Also in the Aquarium both the tanks that held the Lake Malawi Cichlid and the Roti Island Snake-necked Turtles are under going major re-furbs for something new,as for what it will be at this moment in time I have no idea, but one could be for a large native marine exhibit as a good number of native marine species have arrived off-show at the Aquarium! The fish tank in the Secret World of the Okapi is also under going a re-furb for a new species again nothing was specified!

That's a shame; the Probarbus were one of my favourite species at Chester. And I don't think I've ever seen more impressive specimens of this species elsewhere.

Do you know what happened to them?

I believe they lost the due to a water problem.

That would be excellent, I do like aquariums and especially native ones, I don't think zoos do enough to show native marine and freshwater creatures in displays generally, so hope you are right with this one.

If its a really good native aquarium, it will be 'aqua related' competition for 'the place up the road'.

Recieved the new Z Magazine this morning - it contains a rather nice photograph of one of the offshow Tentacled Snakes (Erpeton tentaculatus) held by Chester Zoo.

Less appealingly, according to a letter by Mark Pilgrim enclosed with the magazine, and despite what is described in the letter as an increasing popularity of the entrance, the pedestrian entrance on Caughall Road is to be closed from March 31 2014 for the following three reasons:

1) "As we are starting work on our Islands project"
2) "out of consideration for our neighbours on Caughall Road"
3) "reasons of health and safety"

As the building site for the Islands project is quite some distance from said entrance - the main entrance is actually closer - and the pedestrian entrance has been used without issue for many years, I rather suspect the second reason is the closest to the truth. Does anyone know if the zoo has been having complaints about foot traffic along Caughall Road?

In the new zoo magazine, the map for the Islands development doesn't include a Komodo Dragon enclosure, is this just missing or is it not included in the initial building of the project.

The latter.

Visited yesterday, was lovely to see the zebra foal running and playing. Also the male was having a good run around and seemed pretty annoyed not to be able to get to the females.

Komodo dragons were active too and seem like a great pair. Keeper said they are settling well but very wary of people and the keepers so they were quite far back into enclosure.

Chimp keeper was good to chat too as she mentioned about their group going through DNA testing to see exactly which kind of chimps they are and they are awaiting that info and then are going to make decisions on breeding from their depending on the guidelines/what they are told to do with their group.

Islands seems to be progressing steadily.

I really wish something would happen with this, it's been going on a long time, Tina is growing up fast and needs to see a baby being cared for and a chimp group is a better place with a baby in it!

A male Vietnamese Pheasant is in the magpie aviary by the entrance to the elephants.

My guess would be if its like other Zoos, then any pure West Africans would be allowed to breed, and the others not. But that needs a pure West African male and a way of preventing the other (non-pure if that's what they are) males from making their contribution.

Couple of minor developments:

The Sloth in Spirit of the Jaguar have had their space expanded by means of the installation of several ropes between the walls of the building.

The camel/onager paddock, meanwhile, has been covered with sand.

The current genetic tests can distinguish more correctly some of the other chimpanzee (sub-)species and not just the West Africans!

Yes, but I believe there is an EEP directive to only breed from West Africans, and not others. Is that correct? In which case the provenance of the others might be for interest's sake only.
