Ah. Clearly my turtle-spotting skills need to improve! Why they didn't remove the sign for pitcher plants instead I don't know.

Might have something to do with the fact very few people saw the Turtles even when they were labelled,so easier to remove the label for the thing that people don't see than something they cannot miss!

A male was transferred from Chester to Birdworld in Farnham recently. Same one possibly? :confused:
 
Borneon Orang, Vicky (one of the four on loan from Blackpool) has undergone a procedure to unblock her Sinus's in a UK first. Photos on Chester's Facebook

Vets, keepers and doctors swung into action at the zoo as Bornean orangutan Vicky successfully underwent a sinus operation – the first time the procedure has ever been carried out in the UK.

Performed at our on-site Animal Health Centre, the surgery was conducted by our vet team, colleagues from Blackpool Zoo and a human sinus expert from Nuffield Heath The Grosvenor Hospital in Chester.

The 49kg orangutan had chronic sinusitis which may have made her 'thick headed’ and more susceptible to infections.

But after the two-hour procedure she is already making a great recovery and is expected to be back with her fellow apes within 12 hours.
The operation will dramatically improve things for Vicky and make her much more comfortable
 
I also got to know Nick when I lived near to Chester Zoo many years ago , he always had time for a Zoo Enthusiast . Very sorry to hear of his passing , he was only a couple of years older than me .
 
Sad to hear this. What a loss to the zoo community! A very knowledgeable individual and very much committed to the job in hand.

Visited today - all seemed in good order :)

Few questions:

I only saw one Malayan Tapir; should there be two?

Saw 4 Okapi in total. A pair in the larger outside enclosure (the breeding pair?); a single in the indoor accommodation and smaller outside (Tafari?); a single in the (partly!) off-show pen, seen across the canal (young German male?). Is that the full herd, or is there another young male?

Work on Islands forging ahead - it's a big project!

Chester currently still have as far as I know 3.2 of which 1.2 are in the Secret World of the Okapi and 2 males at the back of the Giraffe house mixed with 1.1 Red Natal Duikers

the turtles have now taken over the old beaded lizard enclosure in tropical realm
 
There is a Palwan Peacock Pheasant chick in Islands in Danger.

I would like to se births and hatchngs in the zoo magazine again.
