Visited today - all seemed in good order :)

Few questions:

I only saw one Malayan Tapir; should there be two?

Saw 4 Okapi in total. A pair in the larger outside enclosure (the breeding pair?); a single in the indoor accommodation and smaller outside (Tafari?); a single in the (partly!) off-show pen, seen across the canal (young German male?). Is that the full herd, or is there another young male?

Work on Islands forging ahead - it's a big project!

There should be two Malayan tapirs and there are two Malayan Tapirs.

Chester have now announced the arrival of three of the young Komodo Dragon from Colchester :) which are now onshow in Islands in Danger in the old Boelen's Python enclosure.

Pig-Nosed Turtles have gone on show in the Elephants of the Asian Forest aquarium.

I'm relieved. I was quite worried to see only the one.

I saw Marjorie & Betong last sunday (on world Tapir day) their keepers had taken the trouble to fill their pond and make them some lovely watermelon frozen treats - they were studiously ignoring all of that and fast asleep inside!! They make a handsome couple though!

Nick Ellerton

:)
I was saddened to hear the news of the death of my old friend, colleague and former section head Nick Ellerton. Back in the seventies I worked at Chester Zoo, I worked with him on the Apes as a relief keeper firstly, getting to know him as a knowledgeable, flamboyant ex public school boy. We always had something controversial to talk about, be it the then strikes at Liverpool docks, management aspects of Chimps and Orang-utans, Nick could always coax your into a discussion, he was nevertheless a fair and interested moderator. Later moving onto the now demolished Cat House, Nick was my Section Officer/Head Keeper. The previous Head Keeper Jack, had always been his adversary, being a born union representative, this led too some hilarious disputes in our breaks, Nick once told Jack" you are not a good employee" but nobody was affended as Jack played this down to his "upper class" up bringing !
After leaving Chester for Germany,I would miss this kind of personality among my German colleagues, who tend generally "too tow the line" I miss the honesty of Nick, when conflict appears, I still have his words in my hears " you are being bolshy again "!!

From the Paignton thread:

3 common tenrecs (Tenrec ecaudatus) born and will hopefully be sent to Chester and Cotswolds wildlife park

Paignton Zoo Facebook said:
We have permission to place surplus [tenrecs] at Chester Zoo and Cotswolds Wildlife Park so you may see them there in due course!

The above is speculation based on communication stubeanz had on the FB page for Paignton - it is by no means certain CWP or Chester *will* get any tenrecs, only that these two collections have been granted permission to possibly receive animals from Paignton.

Update from a visit today: one of the Red Duikers has now moved into the indoor area of secret world of the okapi
