Chester Zoo Chester: Most talked about zoo in the world?

I make a point with Chester of trying to only upload photos of changes or new arrivals - there are, as you say, plenty of photos of the rest of the zoo!

I post any good photos I have taken, regardless of how often it is already seen in the gallery. The gallerys are a place where zoochatters can judge exhibits, build up an opinion of a zoo etc, yet this is not the sole reason I use it. I use the gallery to share my photographs with other zoochatters. In my opinion that is what the gallery is for, sharing photographs with people of similar interests.

If I took a stunning picture of, say, a rhino or lion at Chester, I would want to share it on here. What would be wrong with that? Yes, there are plenty of photos but I love looking through them all. It is certainly the richest photo collection I have ever seen :). Well that's my opinion anyway.

Sidenote: Maybe a seperate gallery could be set up for new arrivals/changes? That way we could keep the general gallery, and still have a place where people that want to judge new exhibits can search through quickly (maybe if that was read only and a moderater added photos?)

Nothing at all - it's up to each user what they upload. :)

Hehe (I must admit, I misread your post before replying and thought you'd said it should only be allowed to post photos of changes/new arrivals. My mistake :)).
I try and pick the 10-20 best photos I've taken (provided I have that many decent photos). However, if I get photos of rarely seen things and they aren't too good I would post (duiker, coatis and tragopan come to mind for Chester).

Why is Chester Zoo so popular among UK zoo enthusiasts? Probably there are dozens of reasons, large and small...
There are indeed literally dozens of reasons, and that is why Chester is much loved by young and old. The more people who obsess about the place the better, it's part of what moves Chester forward and keeps the zoo accountable and alive.

Trying to turn that into any form of a negative by indulging in thread counting and calls for galleries to be read-only is, frankly, ridiculous.

I suspect that Chester has more members (or regular visitors) who contribute to ZooChat than any other zoo in the world. I wonder if it would be possible to count the 'home zoo' of ZooChat members to add to the stats?

Could it just be that it is the largest collection in the UK and most of zoochat users are from the UK or is that to much like logical sense? This tread is pretty pointless.

Can we stick to real news please?

The thing about ZooChat is that it offers all zoo fans a chance to discuss whatever they like about their chosen zoo. Any thread is relevant if it generates interest and responses. You only have to look at the history of threads to see that many die out after only a few posts and some carry on for weeks/months/years. This is the true judge of whether a thread is 'pointless' or not.

I just knew someone from Chester would take my post as an attack on their beloved zoo.

If you try not to read my post as Satan would read the Bible, you will see that I'm not trying to turn Chester's popularity into a negative thing. All my post consists of are thoughts. The post is very positive towards Chester Zoo in fact.

I did not call for the gallery to be closed for additions. You may notice the question mark, which means that I was asking what others thought. There would have been a period or an exclamation mark otherwise. It is however a fact that some of the galleries on Zoochat are almost becoming too big. While I'm delighted that Zoochat is growing, it would be better if it was an even growth, not one gallery blowing out constantly while others remain empty or virtually empty.

You didn't start well when you questioned whether the popularity of Chester's forum and gallery is as a result of what comes close to an "obsession" by ZooChat (and zoo) members. With the best of intentions, it's not a direction I think this thread should be taking, hence the wider point about negativity, especially when there have been a number of posts questioned today as being superfluous.

I'm quite capable of understanding punctuation and the question mark's solicitation of opinions, which is why I gave you mine. ;)

Some out of date figures.

In 1988 the total population living within a 25 mile radius of Chester Zoo was 2.1 million, 26-50 mile radius had 7.6 million, between 51-75 mile radius was another 6.3 million and within 76-100 mile radius it was 5.7 million.

I would think Chester's popularity has a lot to do with the catchment area the visitors come from. Within 100 mile radius is Liverpool, Manchester, Sheffield, Leeds and Birmingham. That is a lot of people.
