Just returned from my Chester visit. Both rhino calfs on show. First time I have seen Bashira and she is a total cutie! I took a couple of nice pictures of her and her mum and will put them in the gallery later. Asani and Kitani were also out in a seperate paddock. Both were sleeping in the long grass. Male cheetah's appeared very interested in the female on the other side of the fence although they couldn't get to her. 2 tapirs in the house. Am I right in assuming that the young female named Shadow has been moved elsewhere? Male bear Sanjay seemed to be enjoying his batchelor lifestyle lying on the top of the hill looking down at the visitors. Lions and Tigers were both sleeping for most of the afternoon although Asha and Asoka did wake up and enjoy some food later in the day. Red River Hog triplets are outside and looking fantastic. Only 1 Okapi on show today. I was lucky enough to have the inside area to myself for a few minutes and was more than happy to watch this Okapi. I now know it was Dicky (m) . All 5 giraffe are still together for now. I spoke to a keeper who confirmed that Margeret and Molly are leaving in the near future but he didn't know where they were going. I think that's about it. Ask any questions and I will try my best to answer them.:)

Which paddock's did you see Kitani and Asani in?

Also was the doors open into the Okapi House?

Asani and Kitani were in the far right paddock oppisite the przewalski's horses.

The Okapi did have access outside. It was standing in the doorway watching the people come in and out whilst I was there.

Forget to add earlier that on our way back to the car we saw a van from Hodonin Zoo in Czech Republic. I believe they are collecting a young lion from Belfast Zoo on Wednesday so the keepers obliviously went for a nosy round Chester whilst they were in the UK!

They could also have been picking up or dropping something off as well, most zoo`s will combine moves to reduce the number of trips they have to make to the U.K.

So they were not in seperate paddicks as you posted before?

So you saw two Okapi's or just one?

Am still confused.

As i understand it, he saw Asani and Kitani in the original Tsavo paddock and Ema and the new calf in the old rhino paddocks (each mother/offspring pair in seperate paddocks)

Yep my fault. I read it wrong.

"She" thank you!

Zoogiraffe-I assumed that they were just visiting as the van was parked in the public car park and I thought they would use a seperate entrance for dropping off or picking something up. But you may well be right there.

Ema and Bashira were in the paddock nearest to the main entrance. Away from Kitani and Asani. Yes I saw one Okapi not two. Standing in front of the outside exibit it was on the left hand side of the enclosure.

I have seen a few big transport lorries park up in the main car park.

It now makes sense, last question the "right" hand side enclosure doors were all shut I persume?

Yes the right hand side was locked up and there was no sign of a 2nd Okapi anywhere.

Depends which end of the zoo as to which gate they use.

Do you happen to know anything about their recent addition of several Red bird-of-paradise females?

ISIS listed 3,1 in June 2009 (female from Bronx) and now list 3,3 (ISIS July 2009); inaccurate or have they got two additional females since June, if so from where?

I think they have come from a private collection in Saudi Arabia.

I only saw one Red BOP today. The Z magazine said that 1 female came from Brookfield Zoo not the Bronx. I could hear more but didn't stay long enough to have a proper look.

Well, thats very interesting news, would love to hear more about it. I thought that Al Wabra (Qatar) was the only collection in the Middle East to keep them.

Al Wabra have breed theirs a couple of times in the past but not been very succesful in recent years, and only keep 2.1 now (had 3.5 in 2003). Very few zoos seems to have had any succes with them lately, apart from Brookfield over in the USA.

EDIT: Anyone know which year the 2 males was hatched at Chester?

Any sign of the Red & Yellow Barbets anywhere? Sorry that im going on about them, last time i'll mention them lol.
