Chester Zoo Chester update 3.8.09

Only one female Red Bird of Paradise is on show, the others are in quarantine. They came from Al Wabra.

Two male Red Bird of Paradise were reared in 2003, and one unsexed chick did not survive. In 2004 2 were hatched but not reared.

Where would they be kept?

They were last seen in the very last aviary in the upstairs run of the Tropical Realm. They were there at my last visit, but have apparently now vanished!

All photo's now added to the gallery. I THINK mine are the first of Bashira. I can't find anymore of her anyway!

Any sign of the Red & Yellow Barbets anywhere? Sorry that im going on about them, last time i'll mention them lol.

The barbets have been moved to the Tsavo aviary where it hoped that they will breed next year. One of the chats also went with them, the other chat is still in the Tropical Realm.

Also in the Tropical Realm the Rhinoceros Hornbills are back on show.

On my visit today I spotted 1 Chilean and 2 Caribbean Flamingo chicks, there could be more. Not a lot happening at the moment.

The monorail staff were riding in the front coach and what they were doing is rather puzzling. One of them would get on at Jubilee Square and ride to Monkey Islands where he/she would change places with the person on duty. The person who was replaced would then get on the train to the next station. Meanwhile the new staff member would check tickets until the next train arrived and then he/she would board the train and be replaced by someone new.

Incidentally my ticket from Jubilee Square ticket machine was a boat ticket.

Mabey the monorail staff got bored and decided to play musical monarail stops? :D

Also the new male Lechwe is been held at the back of the Giraffe House, and the Eyelash Pit Viper is now on show in the Jaguar House. The Dik-diks are not on-show yet.

Very pleased they've finally got a male Lechwe! Pleased the Barbets are on-show, the chances of seeing them have decresead a lot but hey, they're in the best enclosure possible i guess.

Don`t know about having trouble see the Barbets i spent at least 15 minutes watching them going in and out of the termite mound nest hole.

The Dik-dik's were still not on show today, although their enclosure looks like something may have been out and about with hoof marks in the new substrate.
