Chester Zoo Chester Update/ Questions

Well i was going to try and find a different thread to fit all my questions/thoughts in, but i decided i may aswell start a thread.

1. No signs of any new Squirrels at Elephants Of The Asian Forests? One of the aviaries did contain Lady Amherst Pheasants though. I assume something must be arriving soon.
2. The former Lechwe paddock is still empty, have they given up on the Ground Hornbill idea completely?
3. The African Aviary is now looking brilliant and rather close to completion. However the entire area seems rather barren, the only birds on display were Blue Cranes, Crowned Cranes, Storks and a small number of Waterfowl. I didn’t go around to the other side opposite the Gemsbok but there didn’t appear to be any sign of the Pelicans or Wattled Cranes. What are the plans for the remaining species in this area?
4. Meerkat’s wise there were 4 at least in the brilliant enclosure next to Tsavo, but another two in the former Children’s Farm, please tell me that the one’s at Tsavo are staying there.
5. Didn’t spot any Dik-Dik anywhere but I didn’t really have that much time to visit the Butterfly House and therefore didn’t go round to that area.
6. Servals were nowhere to be seen, are they on show yet. No luck with the Pudu or Bush Dogs either.
7. The zoo has acquired Black and White Laughing Thrushes, i saw one individual in what used to be the outdoor Tuatara enclosure right before you enter the Tropical Realm, the aviary is too big for it IMO. The birds were also labelled at the Rainbow Aviaries, of which there's a picture in the gallery. Just wondering how long have these birds been here?
8. Are the Indian Rhino's being allowed any acsess to the paddock, as it didnt seem they were. The Deer were on show but the Blackbuck and Rhinos were a no-show.
9. St Lucia Parrot is still on display in the Lilicane Amazon aviary, anyone know why? Are Hyacinth Macaws on show yet, been a good year since i saw them really.

The Indian Rhinos are probably given access to the area behind the wooden poles which is visible from the 'bat bridge'. Is the chain-link mesh still in place?

The Hyacinth Macaws have been on-show and as I said in another thread, one seems to have picked up the habit of speaking English!

The laughing thrushes arrived about 4 months ago. I saw the pair in the Rainbow aviary, very briefly, before they disappeared into a bush.

As far as I know the dik-diks are still off-show. I'm going on Saturday, I'll try to find out.

I think someone in a previous thread said the zoo were not now having ground hornbills.

ISIS shows Chester having a pair, have they been seperated or have they only just recently been moved into the old Tuatara enclosure.

ZooMania,

I can answer a few of those questions for you

2. The african aviary is on hold, I assume that this is to ensure that the new Baby rhino has an outdoor paddock it can access too.
5. The Dik-Dik are still off-show, I have not managed to spot them either but I was told they are being housed behind the giraffes.
6. Servals are on show, However I only saw one yesterday sitting quite still at the back of the enclosure and would of missed it if I hadn't of gone to see the Kangeroos.
8. The rhinos have access to a small fenced off area of the main paddock which includes the heated pool. The blackbuck and deer could be seen from the new bridge, however yesterday the blackbuck were housed down other end of the paddock.

erm just a quickie, "old tuatara enclosure" does this mean they have passed away? as i truley loved seeing the tuatara last summer and hadn't realised they had died since.

I think it's referring to the 'outdoor' enclosure which is the first exhibit before you enter the tropical realm. The tuataras still have the sandy one inside the realm.

thanks :D i just presumed that it meant both areas

The St.Lucia Amazon is the spare male and they had to put him some where better than on show, the Hornbill Aviary in the old Lechwe Exhibit is not just on hold last i heard its not going to happen.
