I'd say it was about a month old from the size and no idea if there is more than one as yet.

Unfortunately Lushui had to be PTS a few months back - I think it was age related health issues - she was a very geriatric panda in truth but she'll be missed!
 
Oldest in Europe, if I recall correctly.

That said, I hadn't spotted her in close to 18 months so I'd assumed she was dead long ago :p
 
Believe it or not, she was actually the first red panda I ever saw; at this point I have now lost count!

There are still quite a few "oldest in Europe" animals dotted here and there in the UK of course; there's a cluster of three at Dudley, for a start.
 
Chester Zoo Mini Review

I've decided to do this review, although it is very well visited by members. I had visited before, but was very young, so I can't remember much, so this was my first proper visit.

As a whole, the zoo is very good, and definitely worth a visit; I couldn't see all of it, as I didn't have time (arrived at 9.30 (opens at 10), and left at closing time), the bits I missed were; the Butterflies, the Howler Monkeys and the Gentle Lemurs, the wetlands aviary (saw walking past), the Meerkats (not fussed though) and I didn't see the majority of the west zoo and the cheetahs for very long.

Favourite Bits:

- Islands: very nice enclosures, and liked the attention to detail. All of the guides seemed knowledgeable and friendly.

- Flamingo Enclosures: very large flocks and spacious enclosure.

- Tropical Realm: didn't get a long view, but very nice enclosures; the Tuatara were great!

- Monkey Islands: nice enclosures of a nice size.

Non Animal Related

- Food: the food was quite nice and at a good price, with short queues.

- Toilets: they all seemed clean and lacked queues, also had unusual signs, like 'Male Of The Species'.

Least Favourite Bits

- Realm Of The Red Ape: Hard to see into the enclosures, due to the amount of visitors; also some of the enclosures seemed to lack much climbing apparatus.

- Dragons In Danger: Very nice exhibits, but very busy on a wooden viewing platform (very low), I ended up getting stuck on it for at least ten minutes.

- Gharial Enclosure In Islands- Very crowded around viewing windows, I know a lot of members of ZooChat have complained.

Everything was very nice, but those noted deserved merit.

The overcrowding issue has been discussed many times before, of course, but I rather believe this is the first time I've ever heard someone complain that ROTRA lacked many climbing opportunities :p

What did you make of the Giant Otter enclosure, bearing in mind this is a taxon which the nearest major zoo to yourself will soon be obtaining?

I thought it could have had better climbing opportunities, but it didn't feel like it completely lacked them.
 
Wetland Aviary is just the duckery. You missed this years young red-breasted goose, white-winged wood duck, Cape teal, Hottentot teal, Baer's pochard.

I mean the large aviary with the storks and waterfowl in West Zoo, do you mean the one near the Red Pandas and male onager?

are you referring to Europe on the edge, or the african wetland aviary, next to the Tsavo Bird Safari? If you do mean there, then you didn't miss much, the aviary still feels empty without the pelicans.

The African Wetland aviary, I'm sorry I didn't clarify very well!
 
A pair of cheetahs have been paired together in the large yurt enclosure so hopefully we may see the pattering of tiny paws again in the not too distant future?

Ah cool - they have been switching the female and the boys in and out of the yurt enclosure for a few weeks/months now in the interests of getting the scents around for a potential to mate.
Fingers crossed that Adaze likes one of the boys and has a successful pregnancy :)

Well..... He was more interested in her than she was in him! He chased her up one of the trees several times, but she came back down quite soon and started the whole cat and mouse game again so looks like she is just playing hard to get!!

actually if you hear the male "stutter bark" that's a good sign as it's thought that it might help encourage a female into oestrus
 
Question....

Is Chester Zoo value for money?

There is a lot of debate on social media about the increase in prices and how expensive the zoo is. Many visitors are 'disgusted' at how expensive the tickets are, especially now the zoo has introduced 'flexible pricing' for weekends and school holidays.

Compared to other attractions I think the zoo is reasonably priced and when one considers dwell time at the zoo I think it offers amazing value for money. However, the amount of disgruntled visitors posting their views made me wonder..........are the negative comments justified?
