Question....

Is Chester Zoo value for money?

There is a lot of debate on social media about the increase in prices and how expensive the zoo is. Many visitors are 'disgusted' at how expensive the tickets are, especially now the zoo has introduced 'flexible pricing' for weekends and school holidays.

Compared to other attractions I think the zoo is reasonably priced and when one considers dwell time at the zoo I think it offers amazing value for money. However, the amount of disgruntled visitors posting their views made me wonder..........are the negative comments justified?

I guess its a hard question to answer, I just looked how much it would cost for my and my family (2 adults, 1 6 and a under 3) to go tomorrow, it would be £76 compared with just over £40 for Yorkshire wildlife park. But with Chester Zoo being possibly the only full day visit zoo, would it be better to compare prices with Alton towers for example, which is also a full day out and this would cost £93 with car parking, for us to tomorrow.

Its still a lot of money for a family to spend out, with food costs added into that as well.

Its probably why Chester has very good membership numbers.

Does anyone think Chester will ever introduce split membership options, (peak - Off Peak)?

When I visited on Monday, it cost my family about £70, and that was for two adults and a student, I got in for free (Blue Peter Badge, one great advantage of being young (you can get into loads of zoos for free :D). I really enjoyed myself, and the rest of my family did, but I can understand negative comments due to the pricing, as it is quite costly (with food and fuel included, it is very costly (and then accommodation for a night, as without it I wouldn't have been able to have a full day there)).

For the first time in my memory Chester is more expensive than ZSL.

A small comparrison for adults on the gate entry fee that I could find for today (online discounts, children, peak days do complicate matters further)

Chester £25.40p
ZSL £24.30p
Bristol £15.99p
Blackpool £16.50p
Sea life London £23.50p
Blue planet Chester £16.50p

For the price I think that Chester is an absolute bargain in comparrison with other Zoos and in comparrison with other experiences like Alton Towers. Expensive but potentially huge value for money.

I think it's a really tricky one because it's not purely about value for money, you have to overcome people's perception of where they place a trip to the zoo in their outings categories. It's a wonderful place if you are a zoo nerd but you might well be happy with something a fraction of the size and priced accordingly if you just want a pleasant couple of hours out with kids looking at lions, tigers and meerkats and having something to eat.

The probably is the people moaning are most likely those that turn up at mid afternoon and leave before 5pm so then it is expensive.

But a 10-6 day, its a bargain IMO.

Is Chester Zoo value for money?

For me, and my relationship with the zoo, then yes. and more so than any other zoo/wildlife park/safari park.
Up to 8 hours in that enviroment is a privilege that exceeds my expectation. I also get value from other parks, but none has that extra that Chester does.

A family with a few kids though on a budget, even on a full day, is a fair few quid and thats what they will look at, in some ways it could be said that chester could be too big for families with kids young enough to tire before the 8 hours are up. I went round with a friend and her 2 1/2 year old and she had forcast 5 hours max, with a lunch break, before the child got cranky and wanted to go and i think possibly that what some famlies look at.
I believeas well as 2 day ticket possibilities, the zoo are also looking at the idea of a half day ticket, from perhaps 2 to 6 at a reduced tariff during mid peak times for a possibility..
that may work for a fair few folk.

Which ones?

The zoo's website page about the Sumatran orangs names Subis, Puluh, Emma, Indah, Tripa and Tuti. There is no mention of Kirana, who I presume would be Orange Person's seventh.
On the other hand the website is not 100% accurate, there is no mention of Willy on the Bornean orang page - and the photo on it shows Puluh

I'm confused.....there were 7 orangs. 1 adult male, 2 adult females and then 4 youngsters. Is it a typo about 6 or has one died? Sorry if I'm being dense?

Spotted a few camera men/women around the zoo today, guessing for the new series.

One was trying to film the Gharial feeding, although it didn't seem hungry or keen on the chicken and another was filming in the capybara house (not the Tapir one) with what looked like a vet in attendance, couldn't see what was going on though.
