Given the gestation period for the species is between 102–138 days, and the article states the young rat was born in July, I rather suspect the female arrived at Chester whilst already pregnant.

However, as this species is able to breed twice during the annual reproductive period, it is very possible another birth - and hence a true first breeding at the collection - will follow soon.

A new species on show in Realm of the Red Ape is Sumatran Rhinoceros Beetle (Xylotrupes gideon sumatrensis)

Are any of the magpies on show?

Assuming you refer to the Javan green magpies, then no.

azure-winged and red-billed magpies are on show at Chester by the elephant house, and in the case of red-billed also in the owl aviaries.

Yes, I was referring to the Javan Green Magpies. Hopefully they continue to breed and eventually some go on show.

From the original import to Chester - 1.1 went to Prague and another 1.1 are at Jersey. The remainder stayed at Chester
