Chester Zoo Chester Zoo 2017

There's always a keeper in Fruit Bat Forest, but last time I went there was also a camera person in the foyer!
They are not a keeper they are one of the zoo's paid education team, known as zoo rangers, keepers do sometimes cover lunch breaks. Don't start me on the people on the cameras.

Was told that my family and I 'had' to have our photo taken when going on the boat ride in Islands. They were bluntly told no.

The camera people are quite annoying, especially the ones at the entrance. But as Boromir might say, one does not simply walk into Chester Zoo...

More likely is the people he spoke with were zoo volunteers, who also happen to wear the same uniform as zoo staff proper . From experience 99% of which are completely useless ,and a waste of time them being in the zoo.
Some of the volunteers know considerably more than "zoo staff proper". There are some excellent volunteers (a number of whom you know) so let's not tar everyone with the same brush. As people's behaviour gets progressively worse the more eyes and ears the better, but sometimes it's difficult and quite daunting to confront people who are misbehaving.

I simply tell the photographers that I am too old and too ugly. They just nod sympathetically; unfortunately they never disagree :(
Vandalism is one of the problems which is likely to grow as the number of visitors increases and people who have never been to a zoo before arrive for the first time. The zoo might try harder to educate visitors as they enter.
Every person in a zoo uniform - front of house staff, keepers, presenters, volunteers, catering staff and cleaners should be trained to look out for danger signs, report problems immediately and to intervene politely and respectfully if necessary. I am sure this is done already, but if the problem shows signs of growing there ought to be an intensive response.

I wonder what will go into the new aviary. I hope that it is not just the same old birds as it is in every other building like roul-rouls, crowned pigeons, fairy bluebirds, etc.

Hence why it wasn't 100% of them.

I have never had an issue with the photographers, usually ask if we want a photo or say just stand over there, we just politely say No Thanks and keep walking. No major issue, a lot of family's like having a family photo to take home.

The scam story above just leaves me dumbfounded. How stupid of the Zoo in the first place to pay the money without checking. Wouldn't it occur to someone that a letter/email/request for £1.2 million on a change of bank details would and should be verified by a quick call?

Secondly that you can steal £1.2 million and it deserves a suspended sentence. I know people that have gone to jail for far less.

Have the Zoo received the money back?

On the photographers at the zoo I must admit I have found them to be friendly and polite or have I just been lucky.
I have never had a photograph taken at a zoo anywhere and carrying a camera around my neck usually puts off a lot of the photographers.

You have not been lucky Adrian, I have also found that to be the case.

Many years ago I had trouble from a photographer at London zoo. He was very persistant, until I said "ask again and I will wrap that camera around your ******* neck." He got the message with that. Visitors should not be harrassed and these people should realise that that no means no.

I rarely ever oblige to having my photo taken but when I did, they just made me pull a bunch of stupid poses. I never even buy the over-priced photo-books that they put out.

Well stupid just about sums up the person in charge of the project, thank god the zoo has now got rid of him, some of us were starting to think he had got something on somebody in the senior management due to the number of cock ups that happened on the project!!!

well, the ringleader was a man "of good character" :)

I find it amazing the scam even worked. The guys who did it must have been dumbfounded - or maybe even just dumb to have thought it would work. I can just imagine them sitting around planning it, saying "so, we'll just tell the zoo they owe us this money and they'll pay it to us. How can that not fail?" "We'll have to transfer the money straight into other bank accounts though, to hide our involvement - I suggest we use bank accounts that are in our own names! Man, we are clever." "Should we take the million and hop the country, go somewhere we can't be caught? Hmm, naaaah!"

The guys are geniuses.

Does anyone know if the Zoo still have the Brow-antlered Deer? And how many Phillipine Deer do they have in total?
