Kicking off another year - Couple of updates from a visit today with Zoogiraffe and Ophidia:

The new Giant Anteater house is being built on the hardstand in front of the Capybara stable. The structure is up and looks only a matter of weeks away from completion

Work is also progressing well on the Malayan Tapir and Sun Bear/Binturong enclosures in Islands and the new bird aviary's between the Chimps and Realm of the Red Ape

The Pygmy Marmosets in Monkey Tails have a new baby

The Grosbeak Starlings in Monsoon Forest have been moved into an aviary behind the Tortoises in Monsoon. They can still be viewed from the path.
The Wattled Cranes have also relocated from Tsavo area to the Wetland bird nursery (possibly related to ongoing Avian Flu precautions?)

New male Giant Otter (from Doue La Fontaine) is onshow and already mixed with both females
 
Great to hear work from around the zoo is progressing so quickly, and for the Pygmy Marmoset to have another baby! That makes two in two years for the primate and monkey team.
 
I visited New Years Eve & noticed that the Cabot's Tragopan is now in the aviary next to the Bush Dog enclosure. Was a nice surprise. Don't know if this has been posted before. Apologies if it has.
 
Take a bongo next time Nisha, he will put you right, but don'task him to count anything :p

This has been talked about a few times in the Chester zoo 2016 #3 thread.

Visited today, only thing to report are that Indochinese Box Turtle (Cuora galbinifrons) and the Golden Coin Turtle (Cuora trifasciata) are labelled as being in the Mountain Chicken end of Dragons in Danger. Only saw the Indochinese Box Turtle in the furthest away enclosure from the Mountain Chickens. To answer @ShonenJake13 question about Vila the Chimp in the 2016 thread, Vila is with most of the group (16 I counted) I spotted Sally, ZeeZee and Tina but the rest had there backs turned.

No they aren't in the end with the Mountain Chickens they are in the 3 exhibits that they have recently finished,although in fairness the middle one is normally empty,due to the turtle preferring the keepers area at the back to the exhibit!

Thanks for checking for me MG, I will keep an eye out for her (and Boris, still haven't seen him :') ) when I visit in the coming months.
 
Just had a look at the website and found this, an article on the zoo's stock take. I know it isn't much news but it gives us a great look at the Palawan Binturong, notice the cut under the left eye I wonder what caused it? As well as this it shows an interesting Chameleon species that doesn't match with the parson's or panther chameleons on show, unless somehow the panthers are actually happier now to look somewhat colourful, even though that does not match what I've seen in books and on TV.

*right eye ;) very nice to see a first glimpse of the Palawan binturong in this article.

I'm pretty sure that is a panther chameleon, it's just turned brown. If you look up brown panther chameleons on Google the images are very similar to the one in the article.

There is considerable variation in panther chameleons from various parts of Madagascar.
But as far as I know the panthers have been staple diet at Chester for some time!!!
