It happens at more than just Chester,I know that it has happened at another place that this user has visited as the staff told me they did as they knew anything they said would end of on here! While I agree its not good if people think its okay to post everything they are told on here, then I am sorry we get what we asked for no trust and no respect from the zoo world!

Once you have established a personal relationship with staff, as you obviously have, then I completely understand why you would not want to share things confidentially told to you. However, if I am visiting a zoo for the first or second time, I wouldn't expect to be told anything secret by staff. To be honest I don't think they should be doing that. So to my mind what I am told on 'one-off' visits is and should be fair game to be passed on, unless of course I was asked not to.

the zoo had one pair of servals. The male died in 2015 and as Magpie Goose said, the female was exported.

I'm puzzled by your question about the round enclosure. It was still there 10 days ago.

No doubt the zoo will acquire something new to replace the bears and binturongs, we can only wait and see.

The birds for the Rainbow aviaries will be Asian passerines, so I expect to see the babblers back there. The design suggests pheasants on the ground as well

so what you're saying is that people posting conjecture on here makes the site disliked by zoos for spreading false information, so instead the zoos in question deliberately give false information to be posted on here ... er, to stop this? Are the people at these zoos in question idiots?

absolutely. If you are privy to private or sensitive material by virtue of being in confidence then you should not post about it (not even a "I know something that you all don't know..."). But if you are told something as a general visitor then it is perfectly acceptable to repeat it.

Speaking for myself, I don't think that a general visitor would be told something at a zoo, but then told "ooh but it's a secret so don't repeat it on the internet". They simply wouldn't have been told it at all if it was so secret.

Well, I often ask questions of the keepers when I see them, and they're a great bunch, they love nothing more than visitors showing an interest.

As for the enclosure in question, I've never seen a keeper anywhere near it to ask. And I'm definitely curious as to what's going in there.

(oh, and Zoochat has never been mentioned by me or any keeper I've ever spoken to)

I think the discussion of 'To post or not to post' should really be moved into its own thread. It's a very interesting discussion, with different opinions as what constitutes public domain and off the record, but it isn't really relevant to Chester Zoo news.

Just to offer my two cents in the debate. I think if keepers/staff know you are interested in the zoo/species they may give you little pieces of extra information that isn't strictly public domain. Unfortunately, these keepers are then stung when the other party straight away posts the information on here. I, personally, don't count one-on-one discussions with staff as public domain. If I was told something and thought it worth posting, it is only courteous to ask the staff member who has told you if it is ok to share the information online. To me, public domain only covers information that is provided officially [i.e. guidebooks, presenter talks, website, members' magazines etc] - i.e. information that has been given with an intention to reach a wide audience. Otherwise, I would ask permission to post.

As to the Zoochat/Zoo Professional relationship, I do think there is scope for mutual respect between both parties. Being on here shouldn't alienate us from zoo professionals, but likewise if the zoos recognise our enthusiasm and interest and provide us with pieces of information, it is only right we don't throw that respect back in their faces. This forum is for people interested in zoology, zoo history, conservation etc. It is a platform for people with this enthusiasm to share it with others who hold the same interests and to represent zoo enthusiasts to the zoo professionals that look on here. Unfortunately, at the moment, I don't believe this site is helping the reputation of the zoo enthusiast.

Okay so I decided to flick through older chat messages and I found out that the lions are going, or am I mistaken?

Thats correct they are going. However this does not mean its going to be forever. They would be silly to loose a flagship species so I reckon they will phase them out and then bring them back in the future when they have the money to build them a new enclosure.

There was a rumour that the zoo was going out of Asian Lions (not lions as a whole!). There was never any official statement to that effect from the zoo, and these plans and ideas change all the time.

(If the zoo were to go out of Asian Lions, I suspect it would be a switch to Africans in the short-to-medium term (possibly very short) after their departure, but that's my speculation.)

I would love to see a new lion enclosure at Chester. Although there is nothing wrong with the current one I would love to see them having something as great as the tigers and jaguars.

Can't remember my source Paleomatt. As other people have said, things change all the time.

Hypothetical question but where would chester put a new lion enclosure, if the zoo is aiming for zonal areas. Guess it depends on the species.

If they keep Asian, I'd like them to convert half of monkey islands for them, the bother half for Sloth bears.

Just a question, I really like the current location at the heart of the zoo

If they keep Asian lions I think it will be in the forest zone,African lions I think would be in the savannah zone
