An intriguing hint of things to come from the latest members magazine:

Building on the success of the ground-breaking Islands development, recreating the habitats of South East Asia, much of the rest of the zoo will be sensitively transformed as part of a 15 year strategic development plan to create habitat themed environmental zones. From immersive forests to expansive grasslands, these zones will reflect our zoo’s vital conservation work in the field worldwide.

The improvements will continue to allow us to develop the vision of our founder George Mottershead by embodying his “always building” philosophy. The development will provide significant economic, social and environmental benefits not only for Chester but at a regional, national and global level. By 2030, the zoo has the potential to attract 2.5 million visitors per year, allowing us to deliver even more in terms of global conservation, education and science as well as making an even greater contribution to the regional economy, employment and training. We’ll be sure to keep you informed on the new animal habitats over the coming months… watch this space!

Dr Mark Pilgrim, chief executive officer (CEO), said: “ Chester Zoo is internationally recognised as a leading centre for animal conservation, education and science. It is already the UK’s premier wildlife attraction, welcoming almost 1.9 million visitors a year. “ Our vision is to evolve the zoo from a national success story into a truly world-class showcase for the wonderful, yet often threatened wildlife and fantastic, but fragile habitats on Earth. “ It will be a beacon of excellence – creating an internationally renowned centre of the highest quality, providing a wide range of employment, education and economic benefits. At the same time the development will inspire millions to appreciate and treasure the rich and remarkable biodiversity of our planet"

15 years isn't a very long time frame, islands was around 4 years in planning and building, maybe longer, wonder if they will announce the next phase of there plans soon?

Hey, everyone. What would be your top 5 picks for an animal to live in the ex-tiger/ex-sun bear/temporary binturong enclosure? (Don't know the name :/)

Plus maybe the noahs ark play area, it's in need of repair and they have just closed off sections, maybe not worth repairing if it's going aswell

Bearing in mind that a large new play area is being constructed on what was the fountain lawn, this might well be the case.

Otherwise, I would agree that it's time to knock down the old tiger enclosure.

Nope from what I have heard a play area of some description will still be where Noahs Ark play area is!

I laughed a lot at the picture of the digger lol. The area where the Tigers were was reasonably sized and to have it be an empty area would simply be a waste of space. I think it would make sense to build a new enclosure with a new species there. Considering we already have the lookout post, I think we could maybe have something that is partially arboreal or at least can climb trees. I don't know what animals would be at all avaliable but I would love to see some kind of cat there, if I was a wizard I would zap in some Scottish Wildcats considering they are a British species and it would also raise awareness for the cats!

Sorry but putting the Scottish Wildcats on show would defeat the good work the zoo is doing with them,as they are breeding and the cats have a fear of people so they are perfect for being released back into the wild!

As for the the size of the Tiger enclosure yes it is a big space to have empty, but if you add the Europe of the Edge Aviary to it is even bigger area,so why not wait and see what happens,as I am sure that the zoo DOES HAVE A PLAN,as too what to do with the area.

Ah, I did not know that. Well if that is the case and if they are helping them out in the wild then they should keep up that great work. I'm so curious for what the zoo is going to do next with all this space. Also on Sunday I noticed the flamingos were fenced up, is this due to the avian flu issue?

What the did you think they were doing with the Scottish Wildcats, breeding them so that they could become peoples pets,it Britain's most endangered mammal of course Chester is going to be involved in a breeding program for releasing back into the wild!

As for the space just wait and see what happens just like the rest of us,guessing will not get us to knowing any quicker!

As for the Flamingos let me ask was the Tasavo Aviary still shut because of Avian bird flu and then ask yourself the question again!

Just a quick question really I noticed on the Secret Life Of The Zoo tonight that the programme showed an elephant out on the paddock at night is this the case with most animals at the Zoo that they are allowed into the outdoor enclosures at night as I was under the impression that they were kept inside the indoor enclosures at night to keep them safer and more secure.

Nope that is standard, they will only be kept in if there is high winds or its dropping below freezing and they have a young calf.

Ay, I am so glad zoo management planning are not Zoochatters! (just a tickling joke). It would be very unwise to put the Scots wildcats on show as the overall plan is to establish a population ready for releases to take place. With wild ones accomodated to human presence we will never reach that goal from being realised.

As for redevelopment, just wait and see: For now though, I am really glad the Tiger area will come down.

Oksy can we forget about my fantasy with the wildcats now because I'm obviously just really stupid.
