Just a quick question concerning the Tropical Realm - is there anything special about the random pool in the middle of the building? Was there once fish in it or something?

There used to be goldfish, people kept throwing money into the water which made the fish become sick. There were also fish in the poool by the entrance, where the waterfall is, at one time.

Thanks, Rob! :) I do remember the fish in the waterfall pool (Japanese koi, I think), and it does bug me that they had to go because of people carelessly throwing away their money into the pools. As if the fish are going to be able to use it! I think that you can still see some of the coins in there to date.

A couple more animals have been added onto Zootierliste for Chester. They are all fish species: Foxface, Chalk Bass, and Kotsovato Cichlid.

I was wondering if anyone has a list of species for the opening day of the tropical realm?

It is highly unlikely but I'll see what I can find out. Chester Zoo News for 1964 and Zoo Yearbook may gicve some clues.

In June 1965 the Tropical house was home to 14 species of mammal, 53 specimens; 83 species of bird, 235 specimens and 32 species of reptile, 137 specimens.

Sixline Wrasse has been added too.

On another note, does the zoo still have Himalayan monal, Salvadori's pheasant, or Fischer's turaco?

Fischer's turaco are in Tsavo Aviary now, replacing the Schalow's turaco who are now in the aviary between the writhed hornbill and Visayan tarictic hornbills in Tropical Realm. Salvadori's pheasant I'm not entirely sure on.

Is there an official opening date for the next phase of islands yet? From tho latest photos in the gallery it doesn't look feasible to open before August.

It opens when it opens I think the zoo has learn't its lesson of not giving an open dating,in case for some strange reason its not finished in time, which seemed to happen alot till they got rid of somebody, the new play area opened pretty much on time for when it was planned to open!So hopefully we are seeing a start of a new era of exhibits being finished pretty much when they zoo planned to open them, fingers very much crossed on that!

Visited today and here are the following changes I noticed:
-Pekin Robins have been put in the Temminck's Tragopan, Lady Amherst's Pheasant and Fairy Bluebird Aviary
-The Betta pallfina are now labelled as 'Pallfina betta' in Islands
-All the Bornean Orang-utans are back in together and Willie the male was mating with a female; sadly it was Martha...
-Lake Pàtzcuaro Salamander (Ambystoma dumerilli) are now on show in the Aquarium
-The Prevost Squirrel group is now very large; I counted 8
-'Bliss' the Giant Anteater was out in the capybara paddock. She stuck to the back and the capybaras were chilling round the pool
-The new enclosure between the Radiated Tortoise and Dart Frog is finished and ready for its new inhabitant
-There was no Crowned Pigeon sitting on the nest above the Hornbill aviary
-Some White-Winged Ducks have been born, I counted 3 ducklings. The didn't seem to bothered by the Yellow-Faced Myna who was making a racket!
-Saw 2 Philippine Cockatoo from the Old Sun Bear platform
-A Northern Hawk Owl has moved into the owl aviary which until recently kept a Red-Billed Blue Magpie. The Brown Wood Owls have a chick which is quite large now.
-There are some motion cameras in the Aardvark enclosure
-I actually saw a Banteng with 4 legs in the water for the first time, have anyone seen them actually swimming in the pool?
-Work in Islands is coming along nicely and before anyone asks, yes I will upload photos

On 10th June 1981 I visited the zoo and looked at the construction site of the new penguin enclosure. "It will never be ready for the opening date of July 1st," I thought. But it was.

Great news about the salamanders.
The Giant Anteater seems to be a lot more active now that the lazy male has gone.
Brown Wood Owl is a first breeding for the zoo.
How many legs do the banteng you normally see in the water have? :D
