I've just returned from Chester Zoo.

Zee Zee gave birth to an as yet unsexed baby on 16th February. she is rearing it herself. The father is assumed to be Dylan, but it could be one of the subordinate male chimps, no one is sure.

I could not find anything out about an orang utan called Kevin.

The laughing thrushes have been moved to a new aviary occupying the former outdoor tuatara enclosure. I heard them but I could not see them.

The tree frog vivarium appeared to be empty.

The Caiman Lizards are very impressive.

The old tree shrew enclosure in RoRA now houses Timor Zebra Finches and Golden Heart Pigeon.

Also new in this house are a pair of Fairy Bluebirds.

I saw one serval and all three bush dogs.

No pelicans were on show.

All four male cheetahs are now housed together, having the run of both paddocks.

Why did they stop?

Ah I see, thanks. Are any of their chimps pure bred then, or are they going to have to get more in and just breed from them?

I think they have slightly less than 31 now, but not sure how many, because i knoe 1 died in the last few months.

The pill must of slipped out of her bread roll! :p

I was at Chester today too - didn't get to see the chimps, and I dipped out on the serval and the bush dogs, but I did see those laughing thrushes. I also had the pleasure of watching all the Sumatran orangs sitting in the sun near the edge of the moat and amusing themselves in their own charmingly restrained way. Downloading images as I type.

I visited on Thursday, i saw one of the new Laughing Thrushes at the back of the aviary briefly, it is way too big for just two small thrushes so i hope they add something else to join them.
I didnt see any Pelicans either but workmen were in the exhibit, presumely because of the next door African Aviary, so im assuming that they'll return soon.

Is there a particular reason for converting the old tuatara outdoor enclosure or is it just a case of the tuataras not using it and Chester deciding to use the space effectively?

I had heard they where going to convert it to an aviary for New Zealand Birds but cannot think of many that are about in any numbers in Europe except Keas,so but the Laughing Thrushs in makes alot of sense always thought it needed something in their.

No signs of any squirrels at all. One of their former aviaries contains Lady Amherst Pheasant, but i didnt see any.

The only chimps Chester might have which could be pure are any of the very oldest ones which were wildcaught. All the rest(nearly all of them) were bred there and almost certainly crossbred.

I think they can DNA test nowadays to find out if any whose parentage isn't known are pure West African but in Chester's case its very unlikely. Somewhere else in Europe tested their chimps and did discover some pure West Africans among their animals.

I was at Chester yesterday too hoping I got some decent pics. Does anyone know if they still have Madagascan fody in tropical realm as I couldn't spot any. Like new butterfly exhibit but disappointed no signage. Also bring back proper crockery!

They are still labelled, but I've never ever seen them, and they've been in there since 2006.

I've seen the male

Does anybody know why the zoo has yet to post the news of the baby chimp being born on the website?
