Cross eyes in Zoo Lions may be a sign of inbreeding. I have not heard of it in Asian Lions before but it was not infrequent in the past in some inbred African Lions.

Whilst inbreeding is a major issue for the current European stock of Asian Lions (fingers crossed that the new imports will arrive soon and will go someway to solving this) it is interesting to note that Kiburi and her siblings are some of the least inbred of all the current stock...

Kiburi, Kiba and Kumari's parents:

Kalindi KOLN, 2002 (Rajesh CHESTER 1996 X Yamuna ZURICH 1998)

Parys LODZ, 2002 (Bruno LONDON, 1993 X Luei HELSINKI, 1994)

The Chester, Helsinki and Zurich lines are not blood related. Chester and London's cubs are first cousins because their mothers (Chandani and Ruchii) were full sisters. Helsinki's have no relation anyone else (that is apparent without going back through a studbook anyway)

Compare this to London's latest cubs...

Parents: Abi LONDON, 1999 X Lucifer COTSWOLDS, 2002

Abi: Ruchii WILD X Kamal, HELSINKI, 1994
Lucifer: Sabu CHESTER, 1994 X Akela, HELSINKI 1994

Kamal and Akela are brother and sister.... and Sabu is related Ruchii through his mother, Chandani

Remember Clarence the cross eyed lion on Daktari years ago?:)

Yes I do. He was always promoted as terribly amusing whereas in reality the unfortunate animal was probably inbred. I know places like Dudley used to have cross-eyed and 'star-gazer' lions which were characteristics of inbreeding.

I often wonder how closely related the original Asian Lions that came from India to Europe in 1990 were too- given that the wild population lives in a very restricted area and numbers only a few hundred Lions.

Unfortunate as it is, I'm afraid they are.

Only three of the nine who arrived in Europe in the 1990s were (apparently) completely unrelated to the other six - those being Vanaraj (male at Helsinki/Boissiere), Jake (male, resided at London, Chester, and Boissiere), and Arthur (also male, resided at London).

The other six were descended from the same family:
Chandani and Ruchi, who lived at Chester and London respectively, were littermates, born to a pair of full siblings, Rustum and Ruksana.
Leslie and Kirtida (Helsinki) were half-siblings, but their mothers were siblings. Father was William, mothers were Mashihan and Sangita.
Bhagirath (Male at Zurich) was born to Keshab and Sheila.
Mena (Female at Zurich) was born to Dilawar and Mumtaz, who were full siblings.

Dilawar, Mumtaz, Ruksana and Rustum were born to Sunder and Shobana. Sunder also fathered Keshab, Mashihan and Sangita, who were also full siblings. Sheila was born to a pair of wild caught animals who I understand to be unrelated.

Therefore, all Asian Lions descended from this line - all but one old female in Europe - are related by blood in some way.

Sorry :o I knew there was an older studbook online somewhere but I didn't have time to go back and look for it. Thanks for clearing that mistake up

Did they all originate ex Junagadh Sakkaurbag Zoo?

I hope that no-one suggests another Realm or indeed a Kingdom. Could we have a Republic or a Principality or even a Bailiwick?
Perhaps something more mundane would suit better. I think I'll suggest Lair of the Leafcutter Ant ;)

Well, times are hard, and maybe some routine maintenance may have to be put on hold. The building does have a great deal of height, though, and if the humidity could be tweaked perhaps it could then become
Squalor of the Sloth;)

I would love to suggest 'The Jaguar House', but I don't think I'd get far.

I'm toying with:

'Onça 'pon a Time'

I'm thinking the name The Flooded Forest.

Isn't there already a UK exhibit called something like that (Bristol?)?

Personally, I think it'd be a good idea to get some naming right fees from someone (anything to help the zoo develop) though I can't think of a South American (wildlife or not) pun..........

Then again, how about merging it with the nearby coffee shop to make, "Land of the Capuchin-Oh!"

I'd definitely go for "Onca 'pon a time", definitely one for the zoo geeks though... :p

And I'm fairly certain "Flooded Forest" is at WMSP.

Thanks for putting me out of my misery, I was racking my brains trying to remember that.

When I think about it, I'm not surprised I forgot given the gulf between the grandiose name and the underwhelming exhibit is massive.

'Onça 'pon a Time'
That's both brilliant and quite shocking. :D

From a Google+ reply to me:

"Spirit of the Jaguar reflected the theme of the old exhibit - the ancient beliefs of the Arara tribes and their spiritual relationship with the jaguar. The new theme focuses on cattle ranching, human/wildlife conflict and the conservation measures being deployed to mitigate against it."

Perhaps that'll inspire further.
