I don’t know if anyone would know, but why did Tunga the Bull Asian Elephant Calf born in 2004 have part of his trunk missing?

I was just wondering if anyone knew what other species of bird aside from Silver-eared Mesia and Cabot's Tragopan are kept in the aviary by the entrance to Elephants of the Asian Forest

He could have been stepped on as a calf to make the tip of his trunk be missing, another possibility is that if was bitten off from the three other calves in the herd at the time Assam his half brother, or Po Chin his full brother, and Sundara. A similar indecent happened at the Oregon Zoo with two adult bulls Hugo and Packy

This is the gallery beside the chimp island in June 2019. I don't think there have been any deaths since then, and there have been 2 more births, but I have not visited recently so I may be wrong: I hope someone can correct me if I am.

No. Do they have outdoor access in other zoos?

London's have semi-outdoor access, as at least some of their enclosures are outdoors but covered with tarpaulin to create a darkened atmosphere. This is most noticeable on windy days as the tarps move and flap about and some limited daylight can get in. It seems to work, as London's Aye-ayes breed well, and it's nice that they can experience some outdoors weather, like fresh air, temperature changes, wind and what rain gets in between the tarps.

I don't think Bristol's have any outdoor access and they seem to breed well. I'm not sure of the situation at Jersey, but they may have some fresh air there. At Edinburgh, between 2004 and 2009, the aye-ayes did have outdoor access and their indoor cage was quite dimly lit, but not on a reverse light cycle - I didn't visit frequently, but I never saw them outdoors, and I don't know whether they could go out at night. On the other hand I was shocked to see a grey squirrel exploring their indoor area.
I don't think Chester's current pair of aye-ayes are expected to breed as the female 'Mamy' is one of the original founders and she is now very old.
