Chester Zoo Chester Zoo Discussion and Questions 2022

They are blue-throated macaws with the tinamous Hari.

Blue-crowned Hanging Parrots are in Realm of the Red Ape and Monsoon Forest.

Purple-naped Lories are behind the Bali aviary.

It is a shame that so many of the parrots are not on show. The last time I attended an adopter's day at the zoo one of the parrot keepers told me the zoo wanted to acquire Iris Lorikeets, and a long term plan was to house Red-vented cockatoos and Yellow-backed lories in Islands.

Ha - snap!

These are Blue-throated Macaws. Off the top of my head there are also Blue-crowned Hanging Parrots in Realm of the Red Ape and Purple-naped Lory in the small aviary behind the Bali Bird Temple in Islands, as well as the Great Green Macaws and Ecuadorian Amazons.
Have thhe blue throated Macaws ever bred?

Not to my knowledge. They’ve had breeding success with many other macaws including Hyacinth macaws and Great green macaws (the latter for the first time in 2020). Hopefully, they’ll one day experience success with one of the world’s rarest birds.

Well they were on the last series of slotz so they might have been moved offshiw which explains why the great green macaws are in their exhibit

Didn't penny pass away

Yes, Penny has passed away. Perhaps a new female has arrived and she and James Bond are off display while breeding introductions occur.

Chester Zoo have previously had success in breeding this species. They first bred successfully in May 2008 and later welcomed a chick named Jessie hatched 15/06/2014.

Not at Chester and they've had them since 1992.

Chester has bred the following macaw species.

Hyacinth Macaw (Anodorhynchus hyacinthinus)
Blue and Yellow Macaw (Ara ararauna)
Buffon's Macaw (Ara ambiguua)
Green-winged x Scarlet Macaw (Ara chloroptera x Ara macao)
Red-fronted Macaw (Ara rubrogenys)
Illiger's Macaw (Primolius maracana)
Yellow-collared Macaw (Primolius auricollis)

The Blue and Yellow Macaws often bred on the ground instead of using a nest box.

Jangolie is still alive and well. She was initially sent to Madrid, but in 2015 she was transferred to the Estepona Selwo Safari Park. She’s housed with another elderly cow named Tima.

She was relocated from Madrid, due to Madrid going into the Sumatran subspecies.

Her son, Po Chin, resides at Pairi Diaza, and is the breeding male there producing five succesful offspring this far!

So, technically not even green winged macaw.

Apparently tunga passed away does anyone know when

Tunga died 30/10/2017 of a bacterial infection.

Tunga was the youngest of Jangolie’s three offspring - the first being stillborn (1998); the second still living (Po Chin).

Anyone know why the zoo is closing early on some dates in August and also why is it completely shut for 2 days in November?

I would guess in August maybe planning some evening events, so have to close early to clear the zoo, like with Lanterns.

That'll be very sad news if true. :( Tina is/was only thirteen years old, so that would make it ever more devastating. Hopefully if true, we have an announcement from Chester soon.
