Chester Zoo Chester Zoo Discussion and Questions 2022

I do hope that Millie and Kanzi have calves of there own but I remember on a slotz episode the keepers said that Meru has his favourites and they are Dagmar and Orla

But isn't dagmar on a contraceptive due to mburo constantly feeding from her and she was starting to lose condition which was shown o slotz

I think orla should be ready to breed again as Albert is now a year old

I think tula should be given the chance to breed again as she hasn't had a calf for almost 6 years her last calf was murchison in December 2016

And I think kanzi and millie should be given the chance to breed now aswell

So what projects and new things does Chester have planned?

They are concentrating on building Grasslands, so not much else.

Grasslands will have a new giraffe house, a vulture aviary and a small mammal section. As usual though, all this could change.

New species for Grasslands were announced a few yers ago. Common Waterbuck, Spitting Cobra, African Spurred Tortoise, Ostrich, Serval and Caracal. That's all I can remember. The zoo already has Pancake Tortoise, Secretary Bird, Blesbok and 2 vulture species ready for Grasslands.

Nice to hear that the servals will be making a return I was bit confused as to why they left and same with the ostrich too

Didn't they say they were gonna move the Indian rhinos somewhere else so that the elephants can have that space as extra?

Would be a good idea, would need some work on the bridge over the bridal way, move the rhino's over near the lions. I have thought this before myself, but have never heard the zoo mention it

That would be a good idea as the walk from the lions to jaguars can be quite busy but nothing to look at so it would be good if they added a extra area to cut down the busyness and have more to look at and of course more room for the elephants to have more room because poor aungbo doesn’t have much space in his separate area

A giraffe related question does anyone know why they moved narus on when he was a year old
Because kidepo left when he was around two
And sanyu and murchison left when they were 3

It is explained in the last or last 2 series of SLOTZ that Narus was becoming a bit if a handful. He was disobeying the keepers and challenging his brothers(and possibly dad Meru)for dominance so it was decided that moving him was the best and safest option before he got bigger. I belive he went abroad but don't know where.

I believe he went to the Gaia Zoo in the Netherlands.

There is probably a fat chance of this happening but would there be a possibility of moving Martha the old female bornean orang in with tuan in the netted enclosures by the entrance and exit of RORA so they can have a bit of peace in their older age

I think this is rather unlikely; Martha still lives with her daughters, Sarekei and Leia and is close to both.

He has access to both as part of the first netted enclosure is an indoor enclosure even though the windows into the first netted enclosure are covered up their is a small opening in the cover so occasionally you can look into it because when the silvery gibbons were in RORA Temporarily I saw them in their through the opening in the cover that is where occasionally the keepers feed him as I saw last time there was some food in a hammock their and I have also heard him long calling from in their before and I have seen him at the top of the first netted enclosure

And now the red panda has moved out of the last netted enclosure by the exit he now has access to the rest of that enclosure as when the red panda was in there he was in the back part of the enclosure but last time I went he was in one of the hammocks in that enclosure staring out at me so yes he does have access to both netted enclosures

Tuan already lives by himself. And since orangutans are usually solitary, I don't think he'd enjoy a female for company.

Adult male Orangutans certainly remain sexually active into their old age. I'm sure he'd welcome a female if one was introduced. Its more a case of them not wanting to breed from him anymore which is why he has enforced single status.
