Chester Zoo Chester Zoo Discussion and Questions 2022

Does anyone know what will happen to the old lesser kudu paddock next door to the roan antelope because it has been empty since the kudu left around 5 years ago , July 2017 was when they left the zoo could their old exhibit become home to another ungulate or will it just be made as an extension to the roan's enclosure because as they are technically onshow could the blesbok move to that enclosure while grasslands is getting built and a new ungulate could move to where the blesbok are now maybe an Asian ungulate like pere david deer or nilgai or fat chance maybe gaur I'm only saying an Asian ungulate because of the surrounding area

The old lesser kudu paddock and the adjacent roan antelope paddock will become part of Grasslands. No animals will be moved in because they would soon have to be moved out again.

I also would like to see Gaur at Chester, but they are not an EEP species, Banteng are far more in need of captive breeding.

Referring to Bornean orangutans, how many have been born here? I know they had Iznee & Latifah both born in 2009 but believe both have sadly died since. Leia had a baby in October 2020 but I've no idea what the sex is and no name was announced that I'm aware of(I may be wrong) how many have each female had?
Dot was born in June 2020 the birth was just announced late because I remember seeing her on my first visit since lockdown in July 2020

It was a surprise pregnancy- unplanned of course. Multiple pregnancy tests leading up to the birth came back negative so it was a shock when keepers spotted Leia with an infant back in June 2020!

I agree, the lockdown likely influenced the late announcement.

As I understand it, human pregnancy tests are not reliable on orangutans. Far more reliable is the physiological change that happens about 2 weeks after conception and remains until after the birth. It's a signal to males looking up into trees not to waste their time pursuing pregnant females. It's described in the Orangutan SSP's guidelines as 'easily observed', which I can confirm as a simple zoo visitor especially if you've made a note of matings and know what a female orang's body normally looks like.

The zoos social sites are teasing some big tiger news next week?.

No clues to what it is, but could end up just being a new tiger shaped ice cream

Hopefully it is I would love to see kasarna with cubs because she would have learned from the best because her mother kirana was an incredible mother I've seen kirana with every single litter she's had including her first cub in 2011 which only survived 11 days

Wasn't the plan to not breed Kasarna because her mother is already well represented genetically among European collections? That being said, her siblings went off to breed so who knows.

Does anyone know if any of kiranas previous litters like kasih and nuri and tila and nila are still around in the collections they moved to in the uk and Europe because I know jaya who was one of kasarnas brothers moved to manor wildlife park in Wales during 2016 and topan moved outside of the UK

And I was speaking to one of the keepers last time about kasarna's future and she said that they will hopefully be finding a male for her once her confidence has been lifted a bit more because since kirana left I haven't seen much of kasarna tho I saw a glimpse of her last time I went because she is a very elusive cat but I remember on the last series of secret life of the zoo the keepers said they needed her confidence to builded up a bit more before they plan on breeding her

Nila moved from Le Pal to Zoo Reynou in October 2018 and Tila moved to Rome Zoo after a failed introduction to male Asim (the current breeding male at London Zoo). All the other cubs are still at the locations they were sent to from Chester :)

I'm hoping if there is a new male tiger coming in which looks most likely as the tiger in the video looks very male like and if it is a male hopefully we don't get another melati incident

It was mentioned somewhere that Warthogs are now in the Bongo's enclosure, and that Bongo are still held at Chester, so I'm presuming that the Bongos have moved over to the offshow facility over the road, is that correct?

And, how long-term will the Warthogs' habitat change be with the move? I'm guessing this is all part of the beginnings of Grasslands though, so we can probably expect more changes like this in future! :)

The bongos have moved over to the offshow facility so they are still at the zoo
And yes the warthog have moved into the bongo exhibit but again this may all change once grasslands starts I not sure if that will mean the warthogs will move to their old exhibit which currently has one of the rhinos in it which is part of the old rhino house near bembe cafe

I seen a picture on Facebook group showing the new male he’s called dash no idea we’re he’s from

Did anyone here go to the Into the Night thing last night?

I enjoyed it. Many of the animals were more active than I've ever seen them - particualrly Iblis, Kisana and the African hunting dogs. I sincerely hope that they do it again next year.

One problem - I think the food aspect wasn't quite thought through. We spent 40 minutes in the queue for June's pavilion - and then ended up in a brief thing where several orders had gotten mixed up. We were fine with it, but some people were getting really angry about it.

What was everyone's review of the "live entertainment"? We didn't see any of it.

(An additional and possibly irrelevant note - the woman behind me in the queue for the restaurant looked and sounded exactly like Barb from Stranger Things)
