Chester Zoo Chester Zoo Discussion and Questions 2022

ZTL states that Chester have red-crested turaco but I'm pretty sure it is outdated or even inaccurate as I have never seen them. Their latest inventory report makes no mention of them so safe to say there is none currently in the collection.

On my visit (December 2021), there were Schalow's Turaco in the African Wetlands Aviary, although I don't recall seeing any White-cresteds there (ZTL states that Chester's White-cresteds departed in 2020).

Sorry, they were probably the Schalow's ones then and not White Crested.

I have posted pictures of the Turaco's I saw in Tropical Realm and in the Aviary with Cranes and Storks (The ones who have chicks). Not sure what species, but someone who is better at ID'ing Turaco would be able to from the pictures.

That looks like a Schalow's Turaco to me, implying that the species is housed in both the Tropical Realm and African Wetlands Aviary. According to their 2021 report (https://cdn.chesterzoo.org/2022/06/Birds-2021.pdf), the zoo houses 3.4 Schalow's Turaco, so the prospect of housing them in two separate enclosures is certainly plausible.

EDIT: That 2021 report also lists 1.3 White-crested Turaco, meaning that ZTL is most likely mistaken in stating that they left in 2020 and the zoo might still house the species. They weren't in the African Wetlands Aviary during my visit, but that may well have changed.

Can anyone confirm weather this is true because I was watching one of the older slotz episodes and it was the one where aayu the elephant was born to sithami and one part the keepers said "we are mixing maya with the hi ways " does this mean that the keepers always seperate maya from the rest of the herd at night because if they did it could be two options

She is an elderly elephant

And she isn't related to the other elephants

Visited today & saw the 3 baby fossa which were showing nice. Was surprised to see that the dwarf mongoose exhibit had gone though. I know there was talk at one point of mixing mongoose with the lions, but wasn't aware that the dwarf mongoose enclosure was being removed, or am I being daft & have forgotten something...

Is the entire enclosure gone? Surprised if so, just two weeks ago it was still in full use... Wonder if anything interesting will replace it? Grandidier's vontsira going on show perhaps? ;)Could just end up being another seating area though.

Yep, the area was completely vacant. I'm glad this isn't just news to me though - spent most of the visit afterwards second-guessing myself

The zoo was planning to demolish the fountains shop, so may be part of a redevelopment of that area, especially with the new events venue in the old stable block.

Plus the madagascar area is kind of hidden so maybe trying to open it up more.

Was told by carnivore team the other week, there are no plans for the Vontsira to go on show. They are a breeding pair , but have not produced young and are very shy. They will be kept offshow. If at any time they do have young, which they doubt wil happen given it’s not happened previously, an offspring could end up on show, but that pair will remain offshow .

the Boky Boky have bred and have had offspring however, so there is a chance, some of those may go on show at some point in the future.

Yes the narrow striped mongoose have been offshow since they arrived around 10 years ago so hopefully they will be onshow I have only caught glimpses of them in their offshow enclosure

Where is their offshow enclosure?

I'm just looking at the closing times for Chester and wondering if the likes of 3:30 closing has only recently been introduced. Even 4pm seems too early for me.

There's even been mention of 3.00 pm on some websites.

Gives only 5 hours taking into account the 10.00 am opening time. Not really a load of time to visit a large zoo like Chester.

Well just in answer to several posts on here regarding the possibility of Snow Leopards coming to Chester Zoo. Well, all of those who have membership will have your Z Magazine on your doorstep any day now.

In here is the breaking News that work has begun on the new Himalayan Zone which will include a state-of-the-art enclosure for Snow Leopards. And Chester Zoo are looking forwards to welcoming a Breeding Pair in 2024.

Also confirmed is work is starting soon on 'Heart Of Africa' and this 27-acre exhibit will be hopefully completed by 2025.
