Chester Zoo Chester Zoo Discussion and questions 2023

As a former Biology teacher within the Chester catchment, I got an annual mailing inviting us for an educational visit. Unfortunately, although there were clear attempts to link to the National curriculum, they were never strong enough to enable me to make a case to Senior Management that it would be worthwhile. My successor was (and probably still is) part of a working group at the zoo looking at educational resources; despite this, I still don’t think he has actually taken a school visit there. On the other hand, a visit to Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine to witness snakes being milked is now a regular annual trip.

It was not my intention to start a discussion about this...
It was on us for not looking up the term dates as we are from another county.
I find it a difficult subject, as I don't want to offend anyone. But most kids we came across with seemed to have never heard of 'excuse me' (though, many adults don't know this either to be fair). But then also lots of shouting in places they were old enough to know to be more respectful.

Anyway... Does anyone have some info an the baby Okapi though?
I've read some comments from people visiting the past week and they didn't see it either.

We are actually thinking getting a pass for
Chester zoo, as we have a two together rail card, so it's not that bad, and there's a good pub across the station to have food before we head home, haha.

The Oakfield at Chester does amazing food and it's not overly expensive either.

I have seen that the zoo now has Piranhas on display, are they in the aquarium or are they elsewhere in the zoo.

A large aquarium replacing the ant exhibit in SofJ would be a great place for them in the future

I'd rather they just bring back the ants! They've been gone for so long now, wonder what the plan with that is?

They weren't on show on the 15th but the big ex-reef tank in the aquarium was covered in plastic sheeting so new arrivals in there wouldn't be a big surprise. :)

The piranhas are in the Amazon aquarium in Spirit of the Jaguar. They are redbelly piranha Pygocentrus nattereri. The former species lineup remain mixed with them other than the slender Hemiodus, which were moved out.

What species does Chester keep in miniature monkeys?

The larger enclosure has a big group of Pied Tamarins, now (theoretically) mixed with Southern Tamandua (who have a separate house).

The smaller enclosure holds a mixed group of Golden-headed Lion Tamarins, Bearded Emperor Tamarins and White-bellied Pygmy Marmosets (more species, but fewer animals..!).

In addition, there are also Cotton-topped Tamarins on the old capuchin island behind the Tropical Realm (but they're very hard to see in my experience!).

Thank you for the information.

They're in the same enclosure that's housed the species previously, that most recently held Bronchocela.

We went to Chester Zoo again last Thursday (the 27th).
It's about 3 hours in total (walking to station, trains, bus) so actually quite doable (I mean, I'm used to this kind of travel, so I'm not bothered, lol).
We decided on the morning to go, as the evening before we were doubting to much about the weather.
We got there about 10.40 and since this was our 2nd visit within 2 weeks, why not become a member, lol.
We've got 2 passes running out in the next 3 months and won't renew (at least not for now), so I decided I wanted to get a Chester pass (and boyfriend followed, haha).
And as we went within 30 days of our first visit, they still deducted the price from 2 weeks ago which is nice.

First thing, we went up to the Lemur enclosures. Got there at the right time, as they were just being fed, so they all came inside.

Goal of the day was trying to spot the Aye-Aye, which we did, in both enclosures!
I'd never seen one, so that was very cool. The one in the first enclosure was only visible for a minute, it then went all the way into the back.
The other one was sitting very upfront, eating what looked like half a melon, so got a very good view of it. (any tips on taking pictures in such a dark/red environment? I just could not get it to work somewhat decent)

Highlights were that I saw all the Lemurs in the walkthrough! (my new found love)
Just as we came out, all 3 Fossa young and the mother were in the inside enclosure, just for a minute, but luckily managed to see all 4 of them. We didn't see any 2 weeks ago.

Again no active Tamandua, but one did eventually turned around in his hut so his head was hanging out, so could at least see it's face.

Around 5 pm (open until 6) the little Tree Kangaroo was getting quite active, mainly eating.
At one point it came more forward trying to reach for a branch of leaves, and just couldn't get hold of it, so that made for some very quite pics and video's.

We spend 7 hours there, and with it being our 2nd visit in a short time, it still just wasn't enough I felt, to comfortably walk around and see everything. (we still haven't been to where the Meerkats are).

And once again, no baby Okapi :(
All day just saw 1 adult.

The 2022 animal report is now on their website. Sorry if this has been reported before I’ve been on holiday with very little wifi.

Did Chester ever implement a multi-day ticket, am sure there was talk of one at some point (possibly pre-Covid times, so may have fallen through)?

I would quite like to see the other side of the jaguar house used for mountain lions. Don't know how Claus able this woukd be due to the lack of them in the UK but I think this would be great viewing and showing the 2 cats if the americas. The building could be given a rename perhaps but don't know what to.

There are puma in the UK, most notably at Wingham and Exmoor as well as some smaller collections. Not sure if there is enough for surplus to go around. Wouldn't mind seeing puma at Chester, I've never actually seen one before.
