Chester Zoo Chester Zoo Discussion and questions 2023

Just wondering what the current situation with cheetah is at the zoo. I’ve only seen one individual on all recent visits, so is there any plans to bring more in or are the zoo planning to go out of them.
I can't imagine them bringing any more in while their enclosure is occupied by the painted dogs. After Heart of Africa is finished I imagine the cheetahs will move back, I can't see Chester going out of the species considering how popular they are but we'll have to see.

It could be nice to see them focus on another large carnivore species if they choose to let the remaining individual die out, like a species of Hyena maybe.

Don't forget that snow leopards will be arriving next year.
Yes, their collection in that area will be nothing to turn a nose up at by the time they arrive, I was more thinking about an African replacement, though anyway it wouldn't need to be at all as the enclosure the hunting dogs are currently in isn't exactly in an African themed area.

I think the zoo would be more likely to keep cheetah as they are more threatened as well as they already have wild dogs and hyena and wild dogs are more similar then cheetah and wild dogs

I had a wonderful visit yesterday, and hoping to have another next month given the free return ticket. As an update on the Philippine spotted deer (of sorts), the new enclosure between Islands and Heart of Africa seemed to be under some construction with a couple of diggers up to something in there, so I think the reason the deer haven’t been moved yet is because it’s not ready for them just yet.

Chester has only an elderly male cheetah, he is beyond breeding age.

Technically a male animal or human is never beyond breeding age. If a male is fertile, they can produce young until the day they die, there have been several older cats who have bred, with younger females, who've had young after the male has died. I could sort of understand your comment if it was a female, but as a male, he would still be able to breed.

Is Aung Bo always seperated from the rest of the herd now? On both my recent visits he was in the bull pen all day, curious if this is because of musth or if they aren't letting him in the main enclosure anymore now that he is to be moved?

Another question, how many brow-antlered deer are left? Didn't see any today and have only seen a small amount recently. Considering the rhinos are often in the offshow area the paddock feels pretty empty a lot of the time, would be nice to see a larger deer herd in there or even the return of blackbuck...

I think they have a herd of 0.8 deer or at least that's what i counted on my last visit in June and also on my last visit Aung bo was out with the herd in the morning and in the afternoon he was in the bull pen and maya was out with the herd so I think they are still rotating him and maya

Had a really lovely day at Chester today - rained a lot but that helped make it a bit less busy than on my previous visit which was great.

Planned to just wander about this time vs trying to ‘see it all’ and it was all the nicer for it and still got round everything. Makes a difference to have a vague idea about navigation. It will no doubt sound silly to regulars but I missed the wooden bridge over the painted dogs that connects the two sides last time - was nice to find that!

Spent far too long in all the aviaries enjoying the planting and spotting all the birds from the boards - some excellent views. Just awesome.

The Sumatran Orangs were very active indeed and brought their youngster outside after the heavy rain which was lovely as they all played and swung about. Then saw the new Bornean arrival too, though in the house.

The painted dogs were having a feed and it was interesting to see the dynamics in a larger pack.

Got some great views of the Inka the Jaguar and the Andean bear in the enclosure opposite the capybara.

In the afternoon (which was the first time I got that side of the zoo) the chimps were not out, their door to access the enclosure was bolted off and their viewing was all locked with shutters down.

The aviaries in the rear of the older tropical house that have the hornbills etc were all cordoned off with some lifting gear in place so assume some work going on. But most of the free roaming birds were still outside.

The EV chargers did their job again - the slower charge all day works out cheaper than charging on some of the other longer distance zoos I visit.

2022 mammal inventory lists 1.11 deer on 31st December 2022. I am going next week so I'll see how many I can count.
