Chester Zoo Chester Zoo Discussion and questions 2023

I would comfortably say if there was mating taking place it would be Sundara. She is the only breeding female at the moment as Maya is well past breeding age.
I was quite confident that it was Sundara being mated as I mentioned above, it was the cow that @Willem123 saw separated from Aung Bo that was up in the air. I did suggest originally it was probably Maya, but also accepted anything could have happened in the last 2 weeks since my visit.
Speaking of which... presumably, Aung Bo is going to be moved along at some point in the near future (before Indali is old enough to breed) to avoid inbreeding - that or, if the cows are getting an expanded paddock, they get a younger bull.
When I talked to a keeper on my last morning at Chester, I was told that Sundara will be having one more calf with Aung Bo before he will leave- it was mentioned that in a few months they will find out if the matings that happened around the time of my visit were successful, and as soon as they find out Sundara is pregnant, they will start organising the departure of Aung Bo, although a future successor hasn't been considered yet.

There is also anjan who will need to be moved on soon as he gets older.
With Anjan I was told that they will monitor his behaviour, I would assume including: being aggressive, trying to mate with Indali (I think I might have noticed this on my visit) and Riva eventually, as he gets older, and make a decision based on that, when he becomes too much for the herd and they deem it appropriate for him to move on.

I've been looking over the map in preparation for next month's visit, and it looks as if it hasn't been updated to include the meerkats that recently went back on-show, are they in their original enclosure or somewhere else? Also, has construction of the snow leopard enclosure started yet?

As of my trip 3 weeks ago the Meerkats were in an enclosure I think they have lived in previously, situated practically inside of a Black Rhino paddock (the one that has the loop going around it).

With all the discussion of elephant moves. Based of a Facebook post, a large animal movement shipping container has arrived at the zoo and is outside the elephant house

If I had to guess they probably want to get Anjan used to crate training before moving him on? Whenever that would be.

That is where they have been for the last few years, sharing with the porcupines and then the aardvarks.

I would imagine they will need to start crate training both pretty soon, but from what I was told it seems like Aung Bo will probably be on his way out before Anjan, as he move will start being organised quite soon after Sundara is confirmed as pregnant with their next calf (as I said above). I'm not sure whether Anjan will even have left by the time Sundara and Aung Bo's next calf is born (I might be surprised if he's not, he's 5 next month so would be at least almost 7) but it didn't seem like his eventual move was as far along talked about and considered as his fathers, I think it's more of a let's see how things go situation with Anjan in the Hi-Way herd, but I could be wrong. However, it could still take longer for a home to be found for Anjan than Aung Bo, so he could leave Chester first anyway.

Was it the small area by the road that had a concrete pool in it? A long while ago I saw a small Alligator or Crocodile in there!
Are you referring to the semi-circular concrete pool, in the white rhino paddock, almost opposite the cafe on the downs? I was referring to the much larger pool.

Could anybody help me out with the names of the Chester Zoo orangutans and if possible their age as well. I haven't been in a while.
Thank you in advance.

Am I correct in thinking there are two Chimpanzees youngsters and a baby at Chester Zoo? Stevie and Annie and baby Jeff? Or are there any more?

Current youngsters are
Stevie (zee-zee-Dylan)= 4 years old will be 5 this year
Annie (Alice -Dylan)= 3 years old will be 4 this year
Toyah (mandy- Dylan)= 2 years old will be 3 this year
Jeff (zee-zee - Dylan) = 4 months old

Brilliant, thank you again. I've been pulling my hair out trying to figure out who is who. I thought I was one youngster missing.

Has anyone seen the baby anteater yet? Is it in the capybara area. The only picture I've seen looks like another house. Looked several times this week but no joy.
No I went today and no sign. It looked like the doors on the anteater house were closed too. Very disappointed really wanted to see Bliss and pup.

If Sundara is in fact pregnant, it would make sense to move Aung Bo elsewhere now to allow there to be the space one the new baby is born (and to also accommodate Anjan as he grows before he too will be transferred out).

Considering Anjan's not even five yet, I don't think he would be the one being transferred just yet. It would also be beneficial for him to still be around for Sundara's next calf as well.
