Here are a few of the species that will be going into the new African area.

- Rothschild Giraffe
- Grevy's Zebra
- Roan Antelope
- Blesbok
- Kirk's Dik-Dik
- Dwarf Mongoose ??
- Aardvark (in a new enclosure)
- Meerkat (in a new enclosure)
- Rock Hyrax ??
- Eastern Black Rhino
- African Hunting Dog

There may well be some other mammal species. Also many bird species including Ostrich, Vultures, Cranes, Owls and more, also some reptile species. Tsavo aviary will still be here and the much larger aviary next to it.

In my opinion I think that the painted dogs should stay where they are. The pack is related so no breeding is going to occur just yet. I think there enclosure would be much more suited to a breeding pair of cheetahs. There are 2 halves to the enclosure which is perfect for a breeding pair. I just think it would be better to do it this way but probably won't happen.

Nice to hear that the ostrich are returning

The larger aviary next to it, will house Greater Flamingo.

The domestic goats at Chester are Anglo-Nubian goat and Boer goat. I've uploaded pctures into the Chester gallery.

I visited Chester Zoo today, a few things of note:

- I managed to get around the whole site this time and saw most of the animals, the only no-shows to speak of were the tigers (which I was very sad about because I was hoping to see the cubs while they were still little), the giant anteaters (pretty on-brand for that species anyway), the miniature monkeys, the cheetah, the red pandas in Realm of the Red Ape, and everything in Madagascar except a couple of ring-tails.
- The jaguar was almost a no-show, I could definitely hear it roaring but couldn't see it anywhere on my first look, but I went back to Spirit of the Jaguar later on and caught a glimpse of it.
- This was my first visit to the Islands section, and other than the disappointment of not seeing the tigers, I like the area and its animals a lot. Monsoon Forest in particular was great.
- I achieved one of the major goals I set myself of seeing Fruit Bat Forest and the Tropical Realm, I've heard a lot of negativity about the Tropical Realm on ZooChat, but personally I don't think it's that bad. A bit old and dated perhaps, but by no means awful.
- Sadly I couldn't stay in the butterfly walkthrough for long because there were so many people packed in there, I could only properly see postman and blue morpho, with very fleeting glimpses of what I think were monarchs and malachites.
- Just before I left I got a hot dog from the snack stand outside Bembe Kitchen, and a duck came all the way up to me, stood by my feet and just watched longingly at the hot dog as I ate. It even jumped up and flapped its wings at one point, I'm guessing to get me to drop my food. I've never ever seen that kind of behaviour in a duck before, are they filling an ecological niche that would usually be filled by seagulls?

It was an all-round great visit, but I probably won't go back to Chester until 2025 when Heart of Africa and the new snow leopard enclosure are done.

Glad you enjoyed your visit Jambi.

Ducks can be a problem at times, one day last year I was sitting on the grass eating a sandwich and a male mallard took a bite out of it.

Too many people feed them so they associate all visitors with food.

I have a keeper experience coming up with the Komodo dragons, does anyone want me to ask any questions to the keeper?

Noticed yesterday that thanks to the shark exhibition thingy using the old Orang house, the moat of that building is visible for the first time in many years and, like every other body of standing water in that part of the zoo, it remains chock full of Roach along with a few Golden Rudd. It's interesting that the Roach and Rudd in the moats used to be included in the annual inventory but are now - like the Koi in the Chimp moat - always excluded.
