Chester Zoo Chester Zoo Discussion and questions 2023

Before the newer enclosures the porcupines were in a small house in between what most recently had the roan antelope and the zebras and the small paddock that was empty for years, after the wallabies left
Was the paddock that held wallabies not the one that later held lesser kudu?

I had a great time at Chester. Especially with the Sumatran Orangutans. How many do they keep and what are all of their names (and birth dates)?

Hi everyone , new first time to Zoo chat as planning a visit to Chester in the new year!
Just wanted to ask a few things so hope you can help!;
1. With Inka’s arrival from BCS , are they looking to breed her with Napo going forward? I read somewhere that Napo was meant to be part of the breeding programme before Goshi suddenly passed away.
2. Do we have a proposed date when the Snow Leopards are due to arrive?
Many thanks
Chris

Napo is infertile so there will be no breeding. The snow leopards are planned to arrive in I believe the first half of the year, not sure about anything more specific than that.

During a recent visit to Chester I was struck by their security guards, not literally, but I couldn't help noticing how visible security is at Chester and how seemingly over the top it is. The security staff are dressed in police type uniforms with stab-proof vests and radios, they even drive cars with police-like liveries.
Whilst I'm sure most zoos have some form of security, I can't say I've ever noticed it, I vaguely think I may have seen a security person at London Zoo. Does Chester have a particular problem with unruly guests or is it all just a bit OTT?

I've seen them on all our 4 visits since July this year, but never inside the park, only outside at the entrance.

They started having very visible security around the time of the Manchester Arena bombings I seem to remember, they even did bag searches for a period of time.

I have seen a few from time to time but never to this extent.

Yeah, I said to my boyfriend it's police. He then pointed to their vests that said 'security'.

As I drove out of the zoo I thought I was following a police car, then realised there were no blue lights and no police force insignia. It was just a white car with a yellow and blue checker-board pattern down the side.

At Dudley they always had police during Bank Holidays but I never saw any security

Current youngsters are
Stevie (zee-zee-Dylan)= 4 years old will be 5 this year
Annie (Alice -Dylan)= 3 years old will be 4 this year
Toyah (mandy- Dylan)= 2 years old will be 3 this year
Jeff (zee-zee - Dylan) = 4 months old

Does anyone know when Vila came to Chester Zoo?

I once saw a real police officer in Chester Zoo, only one dat though. I have noticed the zoo security look like police.

In 1978 I was stopped by the zoo security man while I was looking at the Arabian Gazelles which used to be opposite the Monkey House. I was the only visitor in the area at the time. He explained that he was investigating reports of someone trying to beak the locks on the paddocks and assured me that I was not a suspect. We ended up having a nice chat about the zoo.
