Chester Zoo Chester Zoo Discussion and Questions 2024

Hi does anyone know how many cheetahs the zoo has? I went yesterday and saw one, I was also wondering if anyone knew its name (or names if there are more than one)

ASTRONOMICAL CHANCE Chester Zoo decided to get polar bears again, how do you think they'd go about it? As far as location, exhibit design, potential additional species to beef up the zone (like the peafowl aviary near the lions, the small exhibits in Elephants of the Asian Forest, the terrariums in RotRA, etc.)

If they did it would go on land that isn’t currently used

In such a theoretical scenario, I reckon the field expansion where the lions are now would be a good shout given just how much space there is there. It would definitely consist of multiple enclosures, lots of cool rock and water features, and would probably feature something like Arctic fox or maybe even pinnipeds. Given Chester’s track-record, if they went for something like this it could well be akin to Detroit’s Arctic Ring of Life it that had ever reached its full potential.

Hope someone can help. I know bird species are not everyone's cup of tea.
They change locations frequently, I am visiting for the first time in a while and would like a list of species and locations if possible.

Here's the complete list of bird species as of the end of last year, I believe there have been a few changes since but by no means anything major:

As for locations, there are too many to do off the top of my head, but if there are any in particular you'd like to know the locations of feel free to ask and we'll do our best. Hope this helps.

Also a lot of species aren’t on display, including most of the African birds due to the construction of Heart of Africa and so won’t be viewable until next year.

Adrian new within the last year are a male Siamese White-crested Laughing Thrush and a pair of Satyr Tragopans in the owl aviaries.

A flock of Brahminy Starlings in the peacock aviary.

Mitchell's Lorikeets in the Bali aviary.

Malayan Crestless Fireback Pheasants and Mrs Johnston's Lorikeets in Dragons in Danger.

Bali Starlings, Northern Helmeted Curassows, Blue-throated Piping Guans and Collared Trogons in Tropical Realm.

No longer on show are Orinoco Geese and Yellow-faced Mynah.

There are probably more changes which I've forgotten about.

As pendrig_milnerae said if you are interested in anything post it and someone may be able to tell you where it is.

Ah so a misleading rebrand of a perfectly good name which perfectly described something,oh well I'm sure that the restaurant and retail sides will be perfect and bring in yet more commercial opportunities for the zoo too exploit out of people.

It's only misleading at most to the few dozen people who actually remember that the old Africa dome project, that was only publicised for a very short time, what, 15, 20 years ago(?), was called Heart of Africa as well. I'm not sure that many people are going to be wandering round the giraffe house wondering where the gorillas are because the saw the plan in Zoo Life and it clearly said gorillas..!

And having tried to buy food at the zoo in summer and found a massive queue or sold out hot dogs everywhere I tried, a bit of extra restaurant space might not be the worst thing...

How long is development on Heart of Africa planned for and how many species are completely off display during development?

Planning for Chester is a bit overwhelming for me, if I'm honest. There is so much to see.

It's supposed to open some time in 2025. As for species that are currently off show, there is a lot, many of which are species the zoo has acquired for the development that wasn't on-show before hand.

As for species that were previously on show that are now completely off show its mostly paddock species and birds. Roan antelope, Grevy's zebra, sitatunga, meerkat, rock hyrax, aardvark, warthog, blesbok, grey and black crowned crane, wattled crane, Kirk's dik-dik... Then a large amount of African birds (mostly waterfowl). As for species that were never on show to begin with but are planned to be in the new development the main species are common ostrich, bat-eared fox, secretary bird, all the African vultures, and greater flamingo.

There's probably some I missed, the list is quite extensive. If you have any queries about particular species I'd be more than happy to answer.
