Chester Zoo Chester Zoo discussion and questions 2025

Could anyone direct me towards the 2023/2024 animal inventory?

When the zoo changed their logo and branding, and hence revamped their website, a few months ago they took all the animal inventories down at the same time  including the 2023 inventory.

Even if this were not the case, the 2024 inventory wouldn't have been uploaded yet anyhow.

That's a Lesser Antillean Iguana, admittedly just as rare as a Tuatara (in the UK, at least).

Lovely photograph though!

But they currently are on display in TR ;)
And yeah as cerperal said that's indeed not a tuatara

thanks very much for the info and correction, I haven’t been into Tropical Realm for quite a while
I’ve been going through old photos and found some Chester zoo ones :)

Another one from a while ago, I think 2015 , a Serval unfortunately Chester dont keep these anymore, I have always wished they kept small cats as well as the ‘normal’ large species
That’s a very nice shot! I’d agree it’s a shame they no longer keep serval, I’m not totally sure why they were phased out (probably individuals dying off and general lack of space). As for small cats in general, Chester tried to keep Pallas’s cats (Otocolobus manul) a few years back but they all tragically died due to illness shortly after arrival.

Plus of course they do currently keep Scottish Wildcat, but behind the scenes in order to ensure any offspring are fit for reintroduction if selected.

Can anyone tell me where I can find the heart of Africa plans?

If you're interested in small cats, previously held at Chester, it's worth noting Chester had a specimen of the rarely-seen pampas cat in the late 1970s/early 1980s.

Zootierliste lists Chester as only holding 0,1 - this was as of 2022 and unfortunately the inventories are no longer online. Is this a true reflection of current numbers at Chester?
I spoke to a keeper a few months ago and he confirmed they just had the one female. He also stated that it was going to be transferred to a zoo in Europe but of course the paperwork was holding it up. Heard nothing since.

A shame if Chester are indeed going out of the species, but with one female remaining, a move to another collection for a further chance of increasing the current captive population makes sense.
