Chester Zoo Chester Zoo discussion and questions 2025

Oh and a follow-up question! I know Chester Zoo had Eastern Bongos at one point, are they going back on display when Heart of Africa opens, or are they off display for the foreseeable future?
It would make sense for them to go where the wild dogs were temporarily maybe? Unless that enclosure wouldn’t be suitable

Re. Andean bears:

1.0 Mateo (2020) went to Port Lympne Reserve in Kent in 2023
1.0 Bernie (2010) was scheduled for be sent to Germany in 2024

This would leave them with 1.2 (Obe, Lima and Pacha)
Thank you for clearing this up, I knew it was something along those lines!

Sorry sorry I keep asking questions that are hard to answer, I saw on the stock list just posted that there are no aardvarks currently (unless I missed them), are they planning to add them into the Heart of Africa area?

I visited today, it was a decently quiet day and my first visit since the rebrand came in. Overall I think the new signage and maps look very clean.

A few things I noticed since my last visit:
  • There is now Barbary striped grass mice in the old sengi enclosure, they are unsigned and are a separate group from those in Fruit Bat Forest.
  • Caiman lizards are gone, there is now eastern casquehead iguanas signed but I didn't see any.
  • Another unsigned species, the caecilians are back in the Tropical Realm in their former aquarium.
  • I couldn't see the white-winged ducks anywhere, in their old enclosure was snowy-crowned robin-chats.
  • There is now a Mexican redknee tarantula in Spirit of the Jaguar.
It was mentioned earlier in the year that there was now Goeldi's monkeys at the zoo, are they on show anywhere? I was expecting to see them in Miniature Monkeys but they weren't signed and I didn't see any. Also the Javan green magpies are no longer in the Tropical Realm.

On a personal positive, I finally saw the Brahminy starlings for the first time and got some great views of the baby sifaka. Heart of Africa is looking great, managed to see the giraffes, ostriches, roan, zebras, and meerkats (as well as hearing some noisy flamingos). I look forward to it's opening.

Not I Kifaru Bwana, I plan to go in normal opening times and avoid the crowds. Last year I got taking to a lady member who said she'd queued for five hours to see the snow leopards on a Members' preview day.
I queued for the preview as well, not for that long though... Mental considering you could go to Colwyn Bay if you wanted to see snow leopards that bad :D:p. I'll also be going during regular times, I'm busy that week anyway!

On the zoo app, the map has been updated with the species in HoA, looks like there is common dwarf mongoose in the Rock Hyrax used to be and yellow mongoose in the old Aardvark enclosure. Porcupines and bat eared foxes in the mixed are infront of the education building. Still doesn't show species for the small animal house

Wonder why the blesbok aren’t on the map. Maybe they won’t be moved in ready for opening week.

Edit: Also just noticed there is no path from the giraffe house to islands on the map. Does this mean when you reach the giraffe house you will have to go all way back to the entrance and walk up to islands that way.
