Chester Zoo Chester Zoo discussion and questions 2025

Ridiculous. Just shows what hype can do...

To be fair, part of the problem there I think was that the actual visitor space in the exhibit isn't huge. This time shouldn't be as bad for that.

Not that I'll be going on the previews, just because of their midweek scheduling (which is totally fair, just doesn't work for me).

Wonder why the blesbok aren’t on the map. Maybe they won’t be moved in ready for opening week.

Edit: Also just noticed there is no path from the giraffe house to islands on the map. Does this mean when you reach the giraffe house you will have to go all way back to the entrance and walk up to islands that way.

Blesbok were mentioned in the zoo magazine as moving to Heart of Africa,

There is no path between Heart of Africa and Islands. Visitors will have to return to the entrance. It is zoo policy to design areas like that.

I think the blesbok are to be mixed with the batchelor giraffes.

Looks like there are 4 (?) large paddocks to the right of the entrance, on the map between the Eastern White Rhino on the left and Aardvark on the right. Is that just for the rhinos? Couldn’t find the planning documents.

I've seen this suggested a few times - there's certainly an antelope house for that area in the plans so something will be mixed with the bachelor giraffes - but also they've always given the impression in marketing that (at least some of) the Blesbok will be in the main paddock eventually. Possibly the antelope house in the bachelor paddock is for, well, bachelors..!

These are the existing Eastern Black Rhino paddocks that are being integrated into the new section (as are the wild dog enclosures and Tsavo aviary, for instance). :)

Do you know the reasoning behind this? It just seems a bit odd.

I would guess it's to assist "normals" (as opposed to we zoo nerds) to see everything.

Yeah, it's a design decision, and not unique to Chester - it controls visitor flow, allows sightlines to be predicted more clearly, produces an easy circular route for first time visitors and allows them more options in terms of storytelling in the exhibit. Even things like placing toilets and kiosks are easier when you know roughly how long ago people will have passed the last one.

It's also a bit of a pain if you're a regular visitor who might want to zip back and forth without doing the whole thing, it's true - but the actual pathways for this are quiet economic so a 'full tour' should be a fair bit less walking than Islands, for instance, and it seems pretty well laid out to enable you to cut between areas within the zone.

Could somebody provide a link to the map?

The map discussed above is the one in the zoo app, so you'd need to install this to see it (it's not in a form where a screengrab would help) - I don't think the website version will be updated until the new area opens fully.

Not I Kifaru Bwana, I plan to go in normal opening times and avoid the crowds. Last year I got taking to a lady member who said she'd queued for five hours to see the snow leopards on a Members' preview day.

I’m certain there was never a 5 hour queue for snow leopard viewing. I think whoever you spoke to was exaggerating for some reason. The max queue was around 1.5-2 hours mainly due to the fact that there was not a booking system in place.
HOA has timed viewing slots so I’m sure the queues will be managed a whole lot better

I’ve been told the same they are only visible to guests staying at the lodges. I’m really disappointed by this as they’re such a stunning species. Maybe there was a problem mixing them with the others ?

Maybe the main paddock isn’t big enough for blesbok as well as the other animals

Also, there are species list of all species in tsavo aviary and wetlands avairy on the app if you click on the specific exhibits button, they will come up.

On the zoo app, the map has been updated with the species in HoA, looks like there is common dwarf mongoose in the Rock Hyrax used to be and yellow mongoose in the old Aardvark enclosure. Porcupines and bat eared foxes in the mixed are infront of the education building. Still doesn't show species for the small animal house

Interestingly, the Dwarf Mongoose marker (which was definitely there as you say) now seems to have been swapped back for a Rock Hyrax one. Possibly these markers need reading cautiously until the exhibit opens. :D

That said, quite a few new species lists available as above as well - Maccoa Duck in the Wetlands aviary is a nice one (also amused to note conservation significance has triumphed over strict zoogeography and Baer's Pochard are also listed for this aviary!).

I thought Ethiopian mountain adders we’re meant to go to HoA

They were certainly mentioned in a lot of recent marketing - so either they're coming later, there's been some problem/delay, they're not actually in Hidden Savannah but somewhere else, or they've simply been left off.

As I noted above, at least one enclosure label has been changed since they started showing labels in the app and the labelled species are hardly exhaustive in the rest of the map (only two of the four species are labelled for Monkey Islands, for instance) so I would be wary of taking any firm conclusions from the app.

Does anyone think there needs to be a separate thread for Heart of Africa when it opens this week? I know when islands opened there was a new discussion created to contain all the hundreds of comments and opinions.
