Chester Zoo Chester Zoo discussion and questions 2025

Is the forest zone supposed to be build within the current footprint, or will that be part of the expansion?

Going to Chester at the beginning of September, wanted to know what the best route is to take to see everything in the zoo. Not bothered about keeper talks, just want to see as much of the zoo as I can, plan on going for a full day there (10am-6pm)

I’d recommend starting with Heart of Africa and then heading over to Islands via the Monkey House, that way you get the two biggest ‘blocks’ completed first and shouldn’t have to worry about getting round them quickly. Then I’d say go via Fruit Bat Forest and the Bat Bridge over to the snow leopards, followed by the giant otters, Aquarium (if it’s still open by then) penguins and Latin American Wetland Aviary before you do Madagascar, as that’ll minimise the amount of backtracking you’ll have to do. After that Dragons in Danger is the next obvious stop, then on down to the okapi house and Tropical Realm, followed by Spirit of the Jaguar and then do Realm of the Red Ape after that, again to avoid too much back-and-forth (the pathways on the east side of the zoo are more than a little convoluted). Then from there head down to the Asiatic lions via the chimp house if they’re not outside, and from there go to Butterfly Journey and finish up on the European aviary, onagers and elephants on your way back to the entrance. Incidentally, the elephant house remains open until the zoo closes so it’s always worth having a look in on your way out, especially if the elephants are going in for the evening.

I realise this seems a little convoluted, but unfortunately the zoo isn’t super clearly layed out so a bit of optimising is needed to make sure you can take it all in, and all being well you should have time to go back to stuff you’ve missed or hadn’t seen. Hope this helps.

Do you know the cause of Margery’s death? It was quite surprising to hear she had died but I had no idea why. I don’t believe it was due to age.
Not sure the cause of death but I would speculate it was an ongoing issue rather than a totally unexpected death as she seems to have had at least 1 operation on her abdomen in recent years as I remember seeing a portion of her flank had been shaved off so she must have had some kind of procedure before her death. Could be unrelated of course and I may be making assumptions but seems probable.

Thank you for the information, it’s a shame we lost her. She had 3 babies Solo, Rony and Nessa but I believe Solo died and I have no idea where Rony is.

I believe Rony’s died too, although I can’t remember where. Nessa lives at Leipzig in Germany.

Can anyone help me identify this large toad I saw in ROtRA yesterday. It was unsigned and occupying the terrarium that was signed for the pricklenape (which i didn't see). I don't think it's the Asian Giant Toad but I'd be happy if it was as it was a no-show. Sorry the photos aren't the best.

Napo moved to the outside enclosure where the Andean bear was located on the left side of Jaguar house. Behind the coffee house .Was moved Sunday, didn't see him yesterday, probs take some time with the move.

Current ongoing renovations inside for him

Saw on a Facebook group someone said inka was infertile anyone know anything about this?

Obviously Napo is and they didn't get on.

I've heard Napo was infertile from contraception use (he was put on it when Goshi first arrived as she was just too young, and they wanted a breeding pair), but I've not heard the same about Inka? I'm not sure why she would be or where the person on Facebook would learn this unless she was infertile from birth?

Who knows

I'm guessing in the future they have the option of moving another male in if they want or if the studbook is limiting breeding they are still both stunning ambassador for the species

My only concern is that that left area is going to be very busy once the insides done
