Chester Zoo Chester Zoo Discussion, Speculation & Questions 2018

Heading up to Chester today. Can anyone enlighten me as to where I might find the Hyacinth macaw, Purple glossy starling and the Yellow backed lory?

Hyacinth macaws at the exit from the ayes-ayes section of the Tropical House, near the gentle lemurs, sand lizards and blue-throated macaws (but they are not often in the visible part of their aviary). Yellow-backed chattering lories are in a small section of the Bali Temple aviary in Islands, you walk past it to enter the Monsoon Forest. Not sure about purple glossy starlings as I haven't seen them recently - but they should be free-flying in the Tropical House (I don't use the R-word because it's silly) or in the Tsavo aviary.

Hyacinths have not been very visible this year, a keeper told me that they don't like cold weather. She was being serious.

We've had the hottest summer for about 10 years.

Visited yesterday 27 / 10 / 2018 just a few things I noticed while around the zoo

Silver Gibbon youngster giving great views
Banteng calf very active
Southern Cassowary again very active the last 3 times I have been I have managed to see this wonderful species.
Whats happening to the Aviary glass fronted exhibit by the Sand Lizards?
How long have they had a pair of Sun Bitterns?
How old are the 2 European Black Vultures ?
Elephants out in the paddock
Chimpanzee youngster outside with the troop

Will be visiting again shortly as didn't do all the collection but was a little short of time and the Monsoon Forrest caused my camera to mist up for quite a while.

The curassow aviary is being rebuilt, a pair of sun bitterns for about 2 years. They hatched, but did not rear, a chick in 2017.

Very interesting, many of them were from before my time. But I remember the old Indian and African Elephant Houses. The Giraffe House is the least changed and I think only the giraffes are still in their original place: although some of the more recent photos (from 1957) show the lions and chimps in the same outdoor areas as today, although these have changed a good deal over the years and both have newer indoor areas.

Thanks Rob for the info can't remember seeing a pair before must have seen them one at a time. Would be great for them to breed a Sun Bittern

They did, in 1971. :p

It was the second U.K. breeding. The first was London Zoo in 1865.

A few quick questions after my weekend visit

1 - what is happening with the old Serval Enclosure now the Pudu have moved?
2 - what will replace the Pallas Cat in there enclosure?
3 - Do you think the collection should have more small cats?
4 - What happened to the Blue Cranes?

1) The Muntjac are currently being kept in it

2) I don't think anything is planned at this time. In the future it will be demolished

3) Yes, but no zoo can have everything. They're realistic and don't bring in species because they're cute. They have to be there for a reason

4) I don't know

Giant Anteaters are back in their old enclosure again now, the Agouti has been moved into the outside Sloth exhibit and the Pudu is in the Pademelon exhibit with one of the Anteaters and the other one has the other side to itself. There is no house viewing though, which was one of the downsides as to when they were there before.

Anteaters were in with the Capybara, but now over in their old exhibit again where they can rarely be seen.

It seems a bit strange to move the anteaters back since they only recently built a house for them with viewing in the capybara enclosure.

The Anteaters were putting on a great show on Saturday afternoon, I've never seen anything quite like it (from an Anteater). I've popped a couple of (less than perfect) pics in the gallery.

Enjoyed watching the bear cubs again today. I was about to post yesterday that I had never seen the damn cassowary there, and lo and behold got a great view of it today. I also had a Komodo dragon all to myself first thing in the morning, and the baby chimpanzee almost all to myself after that.

Didn't see the Yellow backed chattering lorys nor the Hyacinth macaws. Nor the tigers - I have the worst luck with the tigers at Chester. It was a good babirusa day, though.

The Muntjacs were missing or not showing on Saturday and the exhibit looked like it was empty as no food or water could be seen anywhere.
Must agree the Anteaters were very active Saturday. Haven't seen them that active since they arrived
