There were originally three rhino paddocks leading off the one house (for people who aren't familiar, where the warthogs are now). Then these became five, as the zoo used the paddocks across the path, and then six as they spilled into what is now the paddock where the meerkats are. When the new Tsavo house was opened, there became a seventh (on-show). All this happened before the Bembe Cafe was built, and that wasn't quite as long ago as one would think, as from what I recall, the work to demolish the Oasis Cafe and lawn and remodel the paths began in spring 2006.I think the house was closed to visitors about 20 years ago. There were originally 3 paddocks, but they were changed when the new restaurant was built (since renamed as Cafe Bembe) after the Small Mammal House and the Rainbow Cafe were demolished.
So, it is. And closing off the other houses makes sense as the privacy and off-show have contributed to Chester's breeding success with black rhinos significantly.I think the house was closed to visitors about 20 years ago. I think the Tsavo House can be open to the public because there is an off-show area behind the indoor exhibits: the old house does not have one.
Edit Maguari replied as I was writing this, I think we are both basically correct: the zoo made all these changes to hold a larger number of rhinos.
And I’d much rather that than have an extra house to walk inside. So, it is. And closing off the other houses makes sense as the privacy and off-show have contributed to Chester's breeding success with black rhinos significantly.
Glad I'm not aloneThanks for the info I honestly can’t say I have the experience of u lot being 16 and all
There are 7 black rhino paddocks. 3 linked to the off-show house by the car park. 2 linked to the Tsavo House. Only 1 now linked to the old rhino house. Plus 1 beside the monorail, which has its own small off-show house: it usually holds a bull. But of course there are gates which can be used to transfer animals between paddocks when the zoo is closed to visitors. So does this mean there are now 9/10 rhino paddocks including the off show large green house as u enter the zoo via car
You are not. There are often good zoo maps embedded in planning applications too. Please tell me I am not the only person who enjoys looking at the satellite images of zoos on Google Maps...
Interesting, that’s a lifer for me. All you need now is one with a name with a shade of yellow and you have all 3 primary colours.Chilean rose tarantula.
All still there all on show.So I'm visiting Chester for the first time (after being spited by the weather a few years ago)
There's a few lifers that I can see from the latest stocklist and I wondered if anyone could point me in the right direction for the following mammals (or if they are off-show or left the collection!)
Hedgehog tenrec
Elephant shrew
Cloud rat
Dusky wallaby
Bush dog
Burmese brown deer
Thanks so much in advance... really looking forward to finally seeing the collection after waiting many years.
All still there all on show.
Tenrec- vivariums as you enter the bat caves
Elephant shrew: in the okapi house
Cloud rat: In the entrance exhibits in islands next to the Prevost squirrels
Dusky wallaby: in islands with the tree kangaroo just past the warty pigs
Bushdogs: up past the lions next to a magpie aviary, just across from the muntjac deer
Brown deer: share with the Indian rhino just south of the elephant enclosure, next to the monkey house.
No worries. Hopefully all that info is still correct by the time you visit. Thanks so much, that's really helpful!
