Chester Zoo Game

Here goes then:

The first demands sacrifice, whilst the second ushers in the decline and fall.
TLD's are always interesting and tricky, because he likes scientific names and classical themes.

I like gentle lemur's Moloch, but otherwise it doesn't fit the rest of the clue.

I'm still thinking. I looked at the Empire Gudgeon and the Emperor Tetra but they didn't work. My next favourite was Emperor Tamarin, supposedly named after Wilhelm II, but then I couldn't work out a sacrifice angle.

It does. Who wrote The Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire?
I did consider alternatives such as Baal Pennyfather and Mithras Poe, but I'm sticking to my first answer.

And so you should, as it was the correct answer :D

I'm a little disappointed that it was guessed within ten minutes of my initial post, but I could hardly have expected anything less of a retired teacher!

Your turn, @gentle lemur

If you look for us at the zoo, you don't need to go on a journey, just look near the elephants (but we're much smaller than they are).

And I well remember taking weeks to work out the wrong answer to one of TLD's previous questions. I remember it each time I look at the onagers

I don't think the second sentence is part of the clue.

Correct. The top sentence is the significant one.

Both suggested answers are wrong. These animals are on the inventory, so don't bother with house sparrows, house mice or house spiders etc
