TLD's are always interesting and tricky, because he likes scientific names and classical themes.
I like gentle lemur's Moloch, but otherwise it doesn't fit the rest of the clue.
I'm still thinking. I looked at the Empire Gudgeon and the Emperor Tetra but they didn't work. My next favourite was Emperor Tamarin, supposedly named after Wilhelm II, but then I couldn't work out a sacrifice angle.

If you look for us at the zoo, you don't need to go on a journey, just look near the elephants (but we're much smaller than they are).

Both suggested answers are wrong. These animals are on the inventory, so don't bother with house sparrows, house mice or house spiders etc
Belangers tree shrew they are found near the elephants and are far smaller.
I think there is still only one. I think it's clear that there is a larger number of this species.
